Learn to love them.
Or, I think Superwinch makes a slightly slimmer hub set up depending on the year Dana 60 axle you have on that 1st gen.
Or install wider rims and/or tires

Or trade it for a 2wd 1st gen without the hubs.

OR....install drive flanges, like I used to keep in my trail rig '72 Power Wagon, for when I blew a Selecto hub with the 39X15.5 Super Swampers while out in the woods.
They will sit just a bit flusher than the locking hubs.

Actually, the hubs sticking out they way they do is one of the things i like about the trucks aesthetically. If I was wheeling one I'd be a little concerned about bashing a hub on a rock but wider tires would help that.
I love the look of Selectro's despite their mechanical deficiencies.

Wow,
How could you say you dislike something about one of the most beautiful truck ever made,
That's like saying your wife is beautiful but her ears are too big.
Just kidding..
Sometimes ugly things are what makes things beautiful.
The simplicity and squareness of these trucks is why I love them.

I have external hubs and I love them to me it’s easier to rebuild and work on versus the internal units. You could always convert to the internal style that’s more popular.

I never really gave much thought to the hubs other than internals were a lot stronger. I have converted all of mine (Internals) to Warn premiums with the classy brass looking selector instead of the factory black plastic versions. I will admit though I really do love the **** of the older external selectro hubs. Are they weaker and for crawling a bit out there well yes. But secretly I wish the D61/D71 set of axles I put under my Cummins RC had the older style hubs. Being I don't really tow with it and hardly have it 4x4 I think it would have added a cool look. But the Warn premiums are a nice looking set of hubs too
