D80 vs D70

i have seen people swap in D80 rears in our trucks. whats the advantage? is it worth it? can you get 3.07 D80s??? i have been debating converting my truck to a dually for awhile so id rather swap to a dually d80 rather then a single.

THANK YOU!

If you are going to make your truck a dually, I would recommend going with the D-80. One of the good items going for the change is the out board brake drums or get one of the later model and get disc brakes. The drive shaft has to be shorten. When you buy the axle, be sure and get the u-bolts and brackets.By welding a piece metal and drilling a hole , the brackets can be made to accept the mounting for the shocks.

Advantage: Outboard drums, bigger ring and pinion, possibly an axle with less miles on it, bigger wheel studs.

Worth it: Depends on how much you can get one for, and whether there is something wrong with your old axle, and what you do with your truck.

I picked mine up for $300, and I think the cross pins in the old axle were getting worn. so yeah I'd say it was worth it.

Also I think the highest gear ratio you can get is a 3:31, although in a dodge truck the highest they came with is 3:54.

Besides our D71 3.07s I believe the only other full floater 8 lug pickup axle that will house a 3.07 is that sterling (ford) 10.25

The only problem is that the axle is a little bit narrower than ours.

That would be a problem considering ours is a bit too narrow to start with, IMHO.

since my front end is a dana "61" could i still install a set of 3.54s to match a rear end. i really dont want 4.10s. im seriously debating this. would a dana 80 rear be too wide or narrow for my truck? single or dual.

I had to shorten mine 3/4-1".
The Dana 80s from 94-98 look to be the same.
The drums and possibly the width changed in 99-01 models when Dodge offered the 8" wide wheels to accomadate them.
The 01.5 and 02 models had disks. I think these are heavier than the drum braked ones.
Mine is a disk braked SRW from a 2002 model. The width is perfect with the 2002 wheels. Don't know how it would look with stock steel wheels.

There are 3.31 gears available.

You can get either a 1410, 1480 or 1550 yoke for a Dana 80.

It has been so long that I can barely remember, but when we replaced the 70 in a nearly-new 93 with an 80, we ended up having to track down a set of DRW wheels to fit the 80.

I can't for certain remember why, but the coined 89-93 DRW wheels would not fit over the brake-drums, or was it the hubs??, of the 80.

At that time, 80s were scarce as hen's teeth and we like to have never found a set of wheels.

i was thinking about running 3rd gen 17inch wheels and converting to 9/16 studs up front. anyone know if it would be a issue converting a d61 to 3.54 gears? i dont see why not because they altered the 60 to fit the 3.07s.
