D series solid front axle

Does anyone know when they quit putting a solid front axle in the 2wd trucks? I got a guy on another forum saying that they still had a solid front axle in 2wd cab&chassis trucks as late as 89 or 90.

Maybe on a medium duty? Like the D400, 600 etc? I thought the solid axle left in '72 on light duty Dodges?

I also thought the 2wd I-beam axle went away in '72.

However, a solid axle returned in '94 on 2wd 1-tons. I believe it was a straight tube axle with Dana 60 style outers & unit bearings.

I have seen some late 70's/early 80's 3/4 tons w/ a solid axle. Said to be a special order package. At least one was a former forestry service truck. That one used Dana 44 knuckles.

I have owned two '94 - '97 3500 cab and chassis with the blank Dana 60 front end, complete with coil springs, track bar, and 4 links.
One was a dump truck, and the other a 10 utility box with lift gate set up.

Blank, as in no differential, gears, axles or gear housing. Just a straight tube from knuckle-to-knuckle.

Yep, was the easiest way to put a straight axle under a C/C, pretty smart if you ask me.

Right.
Just pull the blank Dana 60 front axle, swap in a complete Dana 60 along with a T-case and driveshaft and you have yourself a 4x4…
Pretty cool.

Now I would have loved to have had that set-up in my crewcab....
