Crunching gears..

Hey all, I started to drive my truck to work to make sure the T-case went well. It is soo SMOOTH! now I have a bigger issues .

First gear feels tight, 2nd and 3rd are not doing so well. If I shift into second I can feel a vibration up through the shifter. 2nd to 3rd you can feel the gears in the shifter and it's a pain to get it into gear unless you rev the motor up a bit or just let the rpms drop then shift it.

What do you all think, time for a rebuild kit? This is a 1991 W250 the kit is about 300$ Maybe I'll flush the oil out, I'm thinking I can take the plate off the side and just inspect it real quick? What kind of oil should I put in there?

I guess when **** hits the fan.. it hits the fan. Pretty sure my truck will be brand new after all this.

One more thing.. okay to drive? I don't want something to fail and blow apart the main gears.

Change the oil. Put 5 quarts of 5W-30 motor oil in it, synthetic if the trans doesn't already have a bunch of leaks.

It only holds 3.5 qts from the factory, but in order for these things to live you have to over fill them. the extra 1.5 qt over stock can go in through the shifter hole at the top if you remove the stub, that snap ring is a pain to get back in by yourself though.

You can also get 5qts of oil in through the TOP bolt in the PTO cover, it's a couple inches higher than the fill plug,

Gotta overfill the getrag.

Well, drained the tranny and she had about two quarts in her. I filled it up with five quarts of oil and she runs really smooth now. 3rd gear is still having a hard time getting there. It's a lot better now though.. not sure how I missed that..
