Crossover Steering?
Crossover Steering?
Howdy All,
I'm tired of the horrendous bump steer I get with the dropped pitman arm I have in my truck. It actually makes it a major pain to drive over rough roads...
I've been told it can be made to "go away" by changing to crossover steer.
Looking at the set-up it makes sense that it would be a much better system...you can check it out here.

There are a couple other company's that make components to do this besides the above...but I like the idea of the tie rod ends instead of spherical rod ends on the street, and I can't really see if the other company's have the little bend in the steering arm either.
ANYWAY...has anybody done this? Is there a better way than the above parts?
Anybody have any advise or tips on how to do this...inexpensively?
Thanks in advance,
Vinny

I've been running an arm from Spyder customs for a few years now. It uses tie rod ends, Chevy on the arm, and then a dodge on the steering box. I've put a 4" drop pitman on the steering box, and clocked it to the rear. I am using a straight crossover link, but I think you could get away with a 2.5" drop arm and the curved link from ORD. The problem will be the front crossmember if there is going to be a problem.
I also boxed the frame and welded in steel spacers where the bolts go. THE FRAME WILL CRACK if you do not do something to make it stronger. The setup was on my 75 dodge the frame was cracked. I've since retired the 75 from offroading and pulled the lift kit. I moved the steering to my 90 CTD.
It makes steering a lot easier off road, especially with a front locker and bigger tires.

Hi Mike,
Does Spyder customs have a web site?
I had the truck apart in the front to adjust the bumper this summer and I was surprised that I didn't see any cracks in the normal spots...but I'll be checking again when I get under there again to modify the steering.

I did my crossover steering with a Spyder customs arm too. As MMiller said, you have to reinforce the frame or it will crack. www.spydercustoms.com
