Crankcase Vent tube

Hey All, just got my first 1st Gen Cummins. Today after finally bringing it home I got out to check out underneath with it still running and I noticed that there was some smoke coming from the "Crankcase Vent Tube" Is this normal?

Very normal. I wish the newer trucks still did it the old way, which was this way. The vapor has a slight oil content, and if you want to keep you tranny, transfercase, and surrounding areas clean, add 6' of 5/8" oil resistant hose and dump it beffore the fuel tank and pointing down. Make sure the line drains down, also.

Here's another way that doesn't leave oil anywhere - more environmentally friendly, as t'were. Best use for an empty beer can I've ever come up with, short of recycling it:

Hey, I like that, Ace.

I have mine routed OUTSIDE the starter, did that when I rebuilt the starter. I dont have a lot of oil on my tranny and drivetrain. Not from the crank vent tube, anyway. Tranny leaves its own oil path.

I was thinking of routing the hose up above the valve cover. Making a catch can with a vent and dumping it into the valve cover.

If you can find one of the valve coveres that has the oil fill on it you can use the tube and bottle off of a 24-valve that goes were the oil fill dose on ours and pulg the vent line that you have now. The prob is that they almost never get brained and will overflow and cover your truck with oil front to back. you could just put about 6" of hose and get it a little closer to the ground like a lot of semis do.

Guys in climates where it freezes need to watch out for low spots in any draft tube extensions. You will wind up with an ice cube in there one morning and the engine will leak from every seal.

I had one of those, then sourced a 2 in 1 breather. It is breather and oil fill. Instead of your oil fill tube being straight up and down, it faces at about a 45* angle towards the battery. Picture here I think: http://www.turbodieselregister.com/f...breathers.html. I added a short piece of heater hose to the end of the pipe so that if any blowby/oil comes out, it will not coat the engine. The ID of the hose has never gotten oil soaked, so I guess most of my crankcase venting occurs from the factory vent.
