counter shaft cluster gears Getrag

So my input gears was SMOKED bad, and it made the cluster gear look pretty nasty, nothing stretched or chipped, but look pitted. How gnarly can this gear look before I have to replace the cluster gear? Im trying to stay within a budget, but also dont want a completely noisy tranny when Im done either.

Can you afford a rebuild if the gear chips?
Think about WHY it's pitted, something did it, either overheating or sitting with water in it.
Replace it, you'll likely regret it if you don't.

Mark.

Going in front of a 4bt, its not gonna see a lot of TQ, much less than that of a 5.9, so I think ill roll the dice, and give it a shot. I cleaned them up with a dremmel, I know its gonna be noisy, but can be louder than a 4bt. If so, Ill yank it and put a cluster gear set in it. I just cant find used parts anywhere, I did find a new gear for $150 from ZBAG.com

Pay me a little now, or maybe a lot later....
You either like to do it right, or you don't I guess.

Then save your money. No point putting a new input on tho of a bad counter shaft. The new input will look like the old one in no time. Wait until you have the money saved up to do it right, or like Mark said you will just have to do it all over again and end up spending more in the long run, because the hardening on the gears will start coming off, with all the extra stuff floating around in the fluid.
Or you could try it, it's your truck/car/project? Buy you WILL end up doing it again.

Well, I bought a new gear set, Got one for $150. Sold some junk, bought some parts. So far Its gone pretty good. I havr all the guts rebuild, input seal is in, front bearing retainer is on, its on its nose waiting for the preload to be set. I have new bearings, and I plan on setting it up with .006 preload, on the bottom of the scale.

How does the counter shaft look? Make sure the bearing are good down there too, if there was metal floating around they would be suspect to fail also, if not quicker since they are submerged in the oil.
