Confused about the timing thing-need schooling

Had Kenny Imler Diesel Performance fix my rear main seal oil leak today and while he had it apart I upgraded to the '95 flexplate and a BD TC. Great people there. If you're ever in Sacramento, Ca., you oughta check him out. Anyway, Ken told me that due to my grayish exhaust and high idling he suggested that I retard the timing. Y'know, I feel like the RETARD! What is involved? He suggested tweaking while on the Dyno to fine tune. I know some of you out there know what he's talking about. Please advise. Carmyne

I think you ought to slow down the idle speed with the idle speed screw.

The exhaust is grayish when you are on the gas and the turbo is spooled? That's great! That means you have just about enough air.

Retarding the timing will lower fuel economy and raise EGT and boost. You don't want to do that.

On our trucks, you change the timing by loosening the injection pump mounting nuts and bolt and rotating the whole pump. Towards the head for advance, away from the head for retard.

Exhaust is grayish around start-up, clears after warm-up, and shows at spool-up. How am I doing? Along with my sig items, the eccentric cone is turned for full power. I will be reinstalling the Smokey pin only after I feel everything is OK.

I'm not familiar with the BD injectors, but I'd venture a guess that any hazing is probably caused by them. Not entirely a bad thing, mind you. If anything, pulling the timing back is going to increase smoke, especially with bigger injectors. I'm running a pretty fair amount of timing (more than my sig reads) and even with the AFC lever ground I smoke less than with a stock AFC and stock-ish timing. What you describe sounds like a good running truck to me

LOL uhmmine dont smoke at all, unless its running, then for some odd reason if i stand on it i get this huge sun eclipsing cloud, i might have a bit to much fuel.

But your on track dont retard timing, add more fuel. Of course thats my answer to every question.

Carmyne, if you weren't running propane I'd suggest that you advance the timing. That would help with the cold smoke.

Thanks, guys. This truck runs great. The new TC with its low stall made a huge difference, also. So glad my truck no longer is bleeding!
