Charging system issue

Well i just aquired a 1993 350 swb and the truck runs and shifts mint, however there seems to be an issue witht the charging system, i am not sure if the alternator is bad or if there is a bad connection or loose wire some place, i will describe the symptoms.
I drove the truck home last night with out any problems, the volt meter was right at about 14v where it should be, went outside this morning to drop the plow off and i went to start the truck and had nothing, no clicks, just dead silence. I opened up the hood and look to see if anything was out of place, everything looked fine. I jiggled around the wires on the back side of the altenator and tried it again and she fired right up. Sometimes the volt meter will read just about 10v, and then sometimes it will read 14v, which leads me to believe that there is some faulty connection coming from the altenator, when the volts are low, the OD on/off switch does not work when volts are low, but when the volts are where they are supposed to be, the switch works just fine. Has anyone ran into this type of issue before or know where i could start to look for faulty wires/connections. Everything seems like its where it should be and there is no visual evidence of bad connections. Thanks

Could be lots of things. I would start with checking the battery cables. One sounds like it is loose.
Others will chime in with other obvious things that go wrong with our trucks.

get rid of those stock junk battery cables. i replaced mine with homemade 2/0 cable, and the electrical stuff on the stuff works so much better

I have given the battery cables a good look over and see nothing loose or out of the ordinary. Where does the negative ground wire coming of the batter connect, is it to the frame or to the block some place. The battery cables look to be somewhat new and not factory. I think the next step is to test the altenator and see if it is working properly. What is the best way to test the altenator? Thanks

I would just pull it off and take it to your local auto parts store. They should have a alternator tester. I live in a pretty small city and most of the places around here have them.

There is probably a way you can do it yourself but i will leave that to someone else to explain.
