Charging issue. HELP!

Two days ago I killed my dowel pin. Everything went well. And I set the crankshaft position sensor to specs as the instruction stated. This morning I noticed that my truck started a bit slower than usual and progressed each time I done so. When I left work I noticed the volt gauge in gauge cluster wasn't charging properly at all. After I got home I tried to start it again and it had to be jumped off. I put a new alternator on and my volt gauge didn't change.

I read in the sticky about the crankshaft position sensor causing charging issues. When I re-installed my crankshaft balancer I didn't install it the same position as it came off. I would have paid attention but I was expecting the balancer to have a key way. Could this be the problem???

What do ya'll think? The truck I'm working on is the one in my sig.

Thanks!!!
Justin.

Sounds about right. I think I read here that if the crank sensor is bad, the PCM doesn't know the motor is running, so it won't allow the alternator to charge?

I could be wrong.

Does the position of the crankshaft balancer matter on these engines? Since there isn't a key way I wouldn't think so. If not that would allow me to look at the crankshaft position sensor itself or the voltage regulator to diagnose my problem.

It just seems odd that this problem came about right after I had the front of the motor tore down for the KDP fix.

Hi,
After much chasing of the problem, I found a broken fusible link on mine. I had thrown parts at it ( including a pcm) and finally found the link problem.
The position of the balancer does not matter, but maybe you broke a wire in the senser leads or it's not plugged in properly.

Is your clearance gap between the sensor and the balancer set at the proper clearance?

I did set the gap to specs. Tonight I'm going to put my old alternator back on which tested good 3 times at two different parts stores. From there I guess I'll inspect the wires to the crankshaft position sensor. Hopefully I'll get this joker back on the road soon.

I just did that a few weeks ago and was loving it the first few hundred miles VERY simple and the 14.2volt set point was about perfect.
Sunday 05:00 it decided to start overcharging (to the point it blew out the high beam filiments in the headlights) so I have another one on order and concerns about the long term but if this one works like the first one did but for a few years I'll be extremely happy.

If you get to the point of being tired of chasing this down you may consider it, especially if you have a good alt already off the truck you want to put back on. The 8315 takes about 5 minutes to install on the brush holder.

Wink

Thanks rainfade

Is there a test to perform to see if the crankshaft position sensor is bad? A new one from the dealer is $109.00. I would like to diagnose my problem rather than throwing parts at it.

Try a slightly closer gap setting, like 40 thou.

Check the wiring to the sensor very closely.

Have you lost OD, A/C, and cruise operation also?

I took the crankshaft position sensor off about 15 min. ago. I inspected the wiring and there was no wire showing through the insulation. However, I did notice the wires were twisted pretty bad near the sensor end itself.

I've been searching and I swapped the ASD and A/C relay and nothing changed.

WANNA. My A/C isn't working either. I don't know about overdrive. Is there a way to test my crank sensor?

I really suspect it to be the crank sensor, because everything happened right after I did my KDP fix. And the crank sensor was the only thing I touched while working on my truck.

Glad you got it going.

Just for closure, I asked about the A/C and OD to confirm that it was the crank sensor and not a PCM or ASD relay problem. If the charging system was the only thing not working, we could have ruled out the crank sensor.

Gotcha. I like learning as much as I can about the vehicles I drive.

The new digital tach I hooked up to the factory tach harness does not work. I have check engine codes 12,45,41,46. Those have to do with charging and OD I guess. System charges okay but lights pulsate. The AC does not work. So..., does all this point to the crank position sensor?

Did you have the codes before you installed the tach? Whose tach is it?
