Talking Windshield Woes

The method described by gozapper is right on. Two people with fiber or plastic "bones" as we called them in the business. Top first because if you install bottom first you will almost always break it when you get to the top corners. Soapy water solution for lube, or plain hand cleaner -brushed on. Don't use silicone! You're gonna want to seal it and silicone will prevent the sealer from sticking. These windshields are prone to leaking anyway. Also depending on which locking bead it has, round rubber or the funky shaped chrome colored plastic, you may need a special tool to insert it without driving yourself nuts, and even then the plastic one can be a bear. The "rope trick" is suitable for installing the back glass but not very useful for the windshield. If you're using a used windshield, check it over carefully. Use a pro if he's familiar with the old stuff. Lots of auto glass guys are new to the business and won't know how to go at this one properly. Make sure they'll stand behind their work if it leaks.

Just some advise from an old pro who was in the business for almost thirty years.

Did my 1st gen. about 9 months ago. Take your time, use the rope/string trick and lots of soap (i used dish soap). My total job took about 3 hrs with cutting out the windshield from my 74 ramcharger to put in the PU. The fit is tight but just take your time.
