Is This The Cause of My Getrag Problems??

Hello I have a 91 Dodge. I have been having problems shifting the Getrag. It gets caught in neutral between gears. I dropped the tranny today and removed the top cover. When I did, a piece of the big spring that puts tension on the shifter fell out. It was broken about 1/2" from the top. Could this be the cause of my shifting problem? What else can I check in the top cover because I dont want to put everything back togather only to find out that wasn't the only problem. Thanks for any help!

That is most likely the shifter-centering spring.

Actually, there should be TWO of them, one each side; on a normal transmission, with the shifter in NEUTRAL, you can feel these springs when you shift right and left of center in order to follow the H-pattern.

Yes, that could very well cause your shifter to hang up in neutral.

Actually its the big cone shaped spring that pushes against the shift lever that is broken. Sorry for the vague description in the first post. I forgot there is more then one spring.

The manual does not show any dis-assembly pictures of the shifter/forks assembly and says they are not repairable, but to replace the entire unit.

I know that to be wrong, because the local transmission shop has bought new replacement parts and over-hauled hundreds of them.

I may be thinking wrong; but, on each side of where the end of the shifter engages the forks, should be a spring-loaded plunger that centers the shifter between 3rd-4th gear; to shift 1st-2nd or 5th-REV the shifter goes against spring pressure; at least that is the way of it in most transmissions I have messed with.

Someone more smarter than me will straighten me out if I am wrong.

If I weren't so computer-illiterate, I would E-mail a copy of the manual; untelling where it would end up if I tried.
