Re:brakes for the 70 rear end!

They are supposed to be able to tell what you need if you give them the axle capacity from ther door sticker.
This was not thae case for my 91.....
My drums had an extruded hub section, not the flat type that they tried to sell me, and I had the 1 1/8 inch wheel cylinders, not the 7/8 or 15/16.
I was lucky when I did mine since my son is in the business, he ordered every combination possible for any Dodge truck of that year and I was able to pick out the stuff that matched once everything was apart.
Best way might be to take it apart first...then go shopping.
Good luck.
Jay

The smaller parts are probably for the 3/4 ton which also uses a 70. The guys w/ 3/4 tons often upgrade to the 1 ton parts.

440,
2 1/2'' linings use the smaller wheel cyl., 3" linings use the larger ones 1 1/8" I think. The 3" linings are the upgrade.

Chris

on the 1 ton the only dif. is a dually or a spring right? its the same 70 rear end is it not? so what makes the dif between the 250 and the 350. the 250 is pretty much a 350 drivetrain. right?

pretty sure the 3/4 uses smaller brakes (rear) and spring pack.
dont know if this applys to ctd, but they did make srw 1 tons with a gas motor the same years.

Re:brakes for the 70 rear end!

OH, surprise! They're not all the same. Thats why we have all these thick books at the parts store. 99 takes 15/16 cylinders and 451 shoes (13x2.5). 93 should be 1" cylinders and 12x2.5 brakes but s*** happens. Run your serial # at a dodge dealer and you can probably find out what you have. My 93 D-250 has 12x2.5. 12x3 usually on duallies. But this is a Dodge and sometimes Dodge-Different is not a good thing. I am replying from the sore, so I have all my catalogues here. Rick

Re:brakes for the 70 rear end!

they also made 350 single wheel ctd. theres a few of them running around here! well my service manual says D and W 250/350 trucks use 12 inch drums so i was just assuming that brakes and wheel cylinders were the same? but then there is like 2 or 3 diffrent kinds! the 70 rear end under the 250ctd is the same 70 rear in under a 350ctd they didnt start putting 80 rear ends till 94 right? cause all the trucks we have worked on or have and junked out have had nothing over a 70. i wish the manual would tell ya!

Re:brakes for the 70 rear end!

FWIW, the underhood sticker on my '93 lists 12X2 1/2" rear brakes. When I replaced the rear linings I found that the previous owner had upgraded to 3" linings but did not upgrade to the larger wheel cyl. So, when I did it I installed both the 3" and 1 1/8 wheel cyl. Got them from Napa- no big deal. The larger linings and wheel cyl. are the 1 ton upgrades- as far as I know

I think you're right bigredbrick. But I always thought the difference between a 250 and a single RW 350 was the 2 or 3 in front of the 50. 8800 GVW= 1 ton. The duals moved gvw over 10000. But hey, I've been wrong before. Thats why I think 12x3 brakes are for dual whl trucks.

If you got 12" drums the 3" pads will fit. From what I've heard you also want the larger wh. cyl. There is a thread on this that lists the Napa part #s but I can't find it. On my truck it was no beeg ting maan!
Chris

Don't forget if you are going from 12x2.5 to the 12x3 shoes you have to get the drums turned.
---
Al
