Brake Controllers

Hey Guys, what do you recommend for Trailer Brake Controller Units? I know there are quite a few out there so I am curious what you guys recommend.

MaxBrake. Do your research and you will see why I took it with me when I traded trucks.

Once you try a Maxbrake you will never use one of those el cheapo brakes again. The difference is night and day

I like my older RedLine digital triple-axle controller the best of any I have ever used.

The brake controller don't matter a whit if the brake components on the trailer are trash.
I haven't found a set of 7,000 pound brake shoes that aren't made of the most rinky-dink high-wear material ever made.
It'd be nice if they made a good semi-metallic pad for these things.
This last set lasted maybe 25,000 reliable miles.

Also, I think 25+ feet of the same guage of wiring on the truck and the trailer might present a problem.
These trailer manufacturers expect there to be no voltage drop in the wiring over that much combined distance?

One thing I have done in the past is re-wire the brake wiring on the trailer with 10 guage wiring to combat voltage drop.
I also keep the brakes adjusted up on the trailer.

Just those last 2 things will effectively change the way even a "junk" brake controller works.

It really IS all about maintenance as much as "proper equipment".

Mark.

I'm glad this came up. I think I am going to replace my no name ancient controller with a prodigy 2.

I think it's a prodigy that the one Duramax has in it at work. I hate the thing, get it turned up so you can actually stop with the trailer empty using the trailer brakes, go put a load on it, and it turns itself back down to zilch again.
