I am trying to learn about diesel engines, but don't even have a working vocabulary yet.

I want to know what "boost" is. Why do you need it? What are EGT's? Etc.

What are CDTs?

 

The only "CDT" I've seen mentioned is usually a typo.

They meant "CTD", being Cummins Turbo Diesel.


Boost is air pressure created by the turbo.
You need air to burn the fuel, more fuel needs more air, therefore more "Boost"

Lost of good reading here, spend a couple days going back in the forums and you'll learn plenty.

EGT's are exhaust gas temperatures.... they are critical to an engine's life span.
WOT is wide open throttle.
