Boost drops to zero, picks up again.

Made two trips in the last mo. 1 to Calif, from Wa.
One to Or. from Wa.
Cruising along at about 58, boost drops
to zero, motor still runs, picks up again.
Will cycle like this mabe2-3 times a minute.
Then run great for miles, then starts again.
Can get rpm's up by putting foot into throttle.
Any ideas what's happening?
New to diesels.

does it sound funny? check the shaft play on your turbo or if its rubbing on the housing. Sounds like your turbo is toast...

it depend on engine load. fuel burn causes heat, heat in turn spools the turbo. air by itself does not. the air expansion by heat is what spins the turbo. both of my trucks to the same on the flat until i hit a hill. then they spool up. head winds will make my boost higher than tail or no wind at any given speed (highway of course). with no wind on the flat at 70 mph i see 5-7 psi. tail winds at 70 on flat i see 0-2 psi. head winds is 10-15 depending on how strong it is.

Could be a bad boost guage, loose boost fitting, etc...

Isspro guage.
Kinda nose dives and goes to idle.
Then picks up and runs fine.
Not good when hauling horses so far.

Fuel filter?

Check the connections on the VE shut down solenoid. It is located on the back of the injection pump. It will have 1 or 2 wires connected to the top of it. Better yet I would replace the stock connectors with either spade connectors or ring terminals. Those loose connections can create the same symptons as you describe.

a bad road joint on trip to Ca.
Will check connections when I get home.

Went home and cleaned contact.
Looked a little fuzzy.
Crimped connector a little more.
Won't get to test 'til next week.
Thanks.
