After researching air intakes for a few weeks, I did the following with better than expected results.
I bought an AFE dry filter, ($58), that AFE uses on the cold air intake systems for 1994+ trucks. With a shcedule 20, 4" PVC coupling, this filter will connect to your existing rubber intake tube.
I took a piece of this aluminum diamond plate, I have from an old tool box and in about 30 minutesshaped it to seperate the filter form the engine compartment with a hole for the pvc coupling to just fit through.
I took a jig saw to the front radiator support and made a nice path for cold air to enter the now larger compartment.
I removed the front grill, installed a 8" x 5" bent piece of aluminum that directs ourside air directly to the air filter (like ram air).
I can now hear the turbo wine, feel a bit more power, engine runs a bit cooler. the BIG difference is in MPG. I have been averagine between 15.5 and 17.75 for the past 15 years. Since this little addition, the worst I have gotted is 18.9 and the best 21.1 MPG.
I am now considering a 4" exhaust turbo back. Just have to get past the $600 price tag!
