best value for turbo upgrade?

My brother has an 89 with the banks kit on it, and what appears to be a newer 12cm^2 wastegated housing. Well, flutter has finally killed the H1C.

He's lookin to keep the 12cm^2 wastegate setup. Should he just go get a HX35 compressor/bearing section? Do these turbos bolt right on, or will he have some work to do? (Keep in mind the truck already has the wastegated turbine on it)

Or is it almost as cost effective to jump to a HX40 or something?

We were figuring HX35's weren't hard to find as take offs on the newer trucks?

There seems to be a reasonable supply of used hx-35's or later model H1's with MWE in the $250 range.

The hx-35 will bolt right in -- the only difference between it and the H1 is that it uses a snap ring to hold the compressor scroll on, and the H1 use screws. Dave (Wannadiesel) just put an H1 with MWE from a '94 on his truck and is very happy about it 'caus he can't make it flutter. I have an HX-35 sitting in the garage waiting to go on my truck . . .

I second Alec's recomendation. Go to Ebay Motors and type "holset" into the search box. Don't pay more than $300 for an HX-35. I got my WH1C for $260 shipped. If he's in a hurry, he might also want to look into a PDR HX-35, their price is competitive with a rebuilt stock HX-35 and it's a way better unit than stock.

well, he's more interested in price than being in a hurry, I kinda figured that $250 might buy a complete turbo.

what's a H1 with MWE?

not much on ebay right now, but a couple on tdr

MWE is map width enhancement. It's a slot cut in the compressor housing around the impeller that allows for more airflow during low RPM/high boost operation, like you see a lot when running a 12 cm housing. MWE prevents the flutter that the H1C's have. Alec can 'splain it much better than me if you need more info than that. Turbos on Ebay seem to come in waves, there's nothing for a week, then you've got 3 or 4 to choose from.

If it is an hx-35, not an hy-35, you should be able to mount it on his 12cm housing. I am pretty sure that you will have to swap housings no matter what, because the 2002's use a different housing/waste-gate actuator set-up. I might be wrong about that, though. The hy's are NOT interchangeable.

Good luck!

If you want to install a HX35 on your 1989 truck, you will have to do some mods. The outlet flanges are different, you'll need to do some machine work or install the elbow that comes on the 91.5 and later trucks and rework the boot a little.

The intake will need to be redone, but the downpipe will bolt right up as long as you move it back a little. The intake can be replaced with 4" tubing or PVC and two 45 degree elbows. The elbow on the turbine housing didn't start until '94, and the cast-on elbows didn't start until '00 I think.

That turbo will have a 12 cm housing, you can just swap the turbine backplates to get rid of the cast-on elbow on the new turbo.
