Battery Gauge function

Folks,
this may seem silly but what is the purpose of the factory battery gauge or gage which ever way you are suppose to spell it in our trucks? the reason i ask is, i was left stranded monday morning because my alternator decided it didn't want to play anymore. Luckily i was able to get the truck off the road and had the tools to remove and a few hours later replace it with a new one. My point is, the gauge never moved, it only fluctuates a little in the middle but never gave me a sign that i was no longer charging. Would this be normal? I know a aftermarket gauge would be best, but thats not an option at this point. Should this gauge show some sort of issue prior to the alternator quitting? Any help is appreciated.

I guess you have an older truck with an ammeter? They are not super useful, since many large sources of current drain don't go through them. The voltmeter is much more useful.
