Battery/Alternator/???
Battery/Alternator/???
Fellas, I replaced the battery and terminal connectors and wired in a push button to start. Now i have a problem somewhere between the alternator and battery. O'Reily said i needed an alternator, so i replaced to no avail. I also replaced all of the fuses minus the horn, window, and turn signal. I can jump start the truck and it'll stay running, but battery slowly drains to nothing. I put the old alternator back in and got my $160 back. My initial thought was a fuse or something I did with the push button, I unhooked anything that was not as it was before. Any thoughts?
What year truck? If I recall, if its a 92 or 93 then the computer controls the alt, and a/c as well. If its earlier, then you have an external voltage reg but if that goes bad it usually over charges...
Nope, the only additional thing I installed was the push button starter switch and once I realized the problem (couple hrs), I unhooked. Problem still exisits. Thought i might have blown a fuse, replaced all but a couple.
I cut back main positive wire to make sure it was clean copper.
Put a multimeter on battery once jumped and drops 0.01 V about every 20 sec.
Blinkers will not work, W wipers wont work, nothing electrical works except interior dome light and dims with battery drop.
I was hoping there was a big fuse somewhere other than the box under the steering column. Some $5 part that can easily be replaced, but may be wishful thinking.

wannadiesel, you were right about the fusable links; cannot believe after all the time i spent looking and scratchn i didn't see this.
Heres what i did but didn't fix the problem, but probably did it wrong. There were (2) 22ga fuse links going from (1) red wire to (2) red wires. I put a 5am 14ga fuse link inline.
There is a header of sorts that several link go into/outof. Do I need to try and tie back into this? Is this a part that I can simply replace all at once? Apologies, I'm not the greatest when it comes to this stuff.
