Hey Amigo, good to talk with you the other day! Nope, haven't decided on the Baja for certain, but I've ALWAYS wanted to go there. Bahia Kino is about 850 miles from my door. Tecate is also about 850. THEN I've got another 600 down to Mulege. that adds say, 1200 miles to the trip minimum. At 13 mpg, that's another 92 gallons of diesel at say, $3.75 - or about $350 bucks worth, for a total of roughly $836.54. Yikes. How many six-packs (of Bohemia) is that?!?
I hear that Baja California is kind of like the North Rim of the Grand Canyon: Almost nobody goes there because its remote. That right there is a damned good reason to go there! If it was easy EVERYBODY would be there.... We might just go to Kino or Guaymas / San Carlos. More beer drinking on the beach time.... THANKS for all the good travel info. H.

I think that diesel in Mexico will be cheaper than that, the exchange rate today is 13.4 pesos to the dollar, not bad. I just bought that lot I told you about and the exchange was 14, I got a pretty good deal. Exchanging money over a few days, 180000 pesos was less than 14k...Mark

I went all the way down to los cabos 3 months ago, a 2500 mile trip, both sides of baja. My lift pump died but the engine kept running. I went off roading and my transmission x member bolts got lost. I got stuck in mud, had to be pulled off by a pickup truck. Also i had to tighten my steering linkages every now and then. If this is your first time to baja, visit bajanomad.com for more tips. People post their trip reports there, including me.

Even if you dont go offroading, there are lots of offroad detours. Bring spares for your trailer, tires and leaf springs.

Good advice. Sounds like you had a great trip! I mean, offroading you expect all of that stuff to happen, and the Baja is the mother in law of all testing grounds, is it not? I'm getting all the tools and spares together. Having the parts almost guarantees that you won't need them. I had a 70 chevy shortbed for 20 years. Top end started making ticky noises so I found a good used 4 bolt 350 and had it sitting on the stand, ready for action. That was 10 years ago. Its still sitting on the stand..... THANKS for the post! I'm newly registered as ElCazadorAZ on Bajanomad.com H.

Headlight Relay Fix

The wiring in the stock setup is woefully inadequate, as is the cheezy headlight switch. Here is a world-class write-up by Jim Lane on how to fire relays with the headlight switch and remove the electrical load from the stock switch and wiring:

mulege is a beautiful experience, been down a few times, flying in, the old air strip ended off a cliff, another interesting experience, parts are available in the larger towns, the peninsula has become credibly civilized since hiway 1 got paved in 1969, i went down when it was all dirt, colonial guerrero-cabo, a couple times, parts back then could be found on abandoned vehicles. the road is narrow and rough, the tour buses are 6" wider than the lane, pass carefully, tires will be your main concern, have a safe trip, sorry to hear about your pup.

Sooty, sounds like you were on of the pioneers. You must have great memories if the place. My family has been going to Puerto Penasco since the early 60's. There was only one guy to buy ice and shrimp from. Now, we skip the place and are looking at the Baja. Helluva drive, but, like the North Rim of the Grand Canyon, its worth it. Thanks for the kind words about the Bully-girl too. Looking for another. H
