axle failures? What to do? Diagnosis? what's normal failure mode?
Guys,
So I put new brakes on the old Dodge 3/4 ton pickup truck. Then I changed the diff oil today- was done a few years ago... Anyway, things don't look good- I found some bits of a bearing cage...
So what do ppl do? Is it possible to replace the bearings in the truck? From experience, I must say that diff gear sets ussually don't require new shims if I use the same timken bearings. Bearings are toleranced quite tight.
I wish I had known this before spending $300 on brake parts. Seems to have resistance in reverse.. though it was the transmission. But maybe this is the sign of the diff being bad?

The cage of the bearing? Any pictures? For the cage to have gone to pieces and gotten caught in the magnet then there must be something really really wrong. If there was that much metal floating around in the diff then I would think there is going to be damage to the pinion bearing and most likely the gear set also. Then also look very hard at the spiders and side gears also, if its a powerlock also the clutches and steels also.

I'm told by gear vendors this is VERY common with the dana 60/70's. This is why dana started making the Dana 80's with bigger bearings. They say to replace the bearings @ 125,000 miles or so.

My money is on it being the ring gear side carrier bearing. They wear out first. It is possible that that the chunks are leftover from a previous failure. I have found that before. The other bearings will most likely show pitting from all the trash in the oil, but you will have to take a look. It is hard to believe, but the gears may be OK yet.
