Autometer Tach ?? For A Friend
A good friend has a new Autometer Tachometer, the kind that picks up from the alternator.
My Ford alternator has a "seam" between the two halves, that the tach sensor "straddles".
A big hose-clamp goes around the alternator and holds the sensor.
His truck is early 91, with stock alternator.
His alternator does not have this "seam".
Where and how should he mount the pick-up sensor on the Dodge alternator??
Pictures would be nice.
Thanks.

I hooked up the tach temporarily so I could see it while under the hood then I just held the coil on the alternator and moved it around to get a good signal then I clamped it in place.

What Edwin said. Make sure you wind it up a bit because they get unstable at high RPM unless they are in the right spot.
Randy, it's intended for diesels, it gets a signal from a coil clamped to the alternator.

Bearkiller,
Right in the middle at the 8 o'clock position is the 'sweet' spot. I had my tach sitting on the dash as an ornament the first 2 weeks after installation. I couldn't get a signal and even had Autometer send me a new sensor probe at no charge thinking I had a defective one. After positioning as mentioned, it works like a charm.
Aloha,
Matt

There are two side-by-side wires (like a lamp-cord) that go to the sensor.
If hooking to the "W" terminal, which wire would go where??
He will most likely go the clamp-to-the-housing route; but, I would like to know more about the other method.
While we were looking at my truck and his, I went blank
, and completely forgot about the wife's truck
, sitting right there
, with an electronic VDO tach wired up on it
.After he left, I did think of it, and looked it over, without un-wrapping the nine miles of black tape that the wires dis-appeared into(previous owner's doing
).Her truck has no obvious external tach sensor; but, there are two wires, that don't look stock, that dis-appear into that maze of tape.
Thanks.

I was able to sneak in and read that thread.
Some good pictures/info there.
But, it still leaves the question:
These things have two wires to the alternator/sensor; where does the second wire connect, when hooked up like the ones in the pictures??
Thanks.
