auto tranny opinions

the auto trans in my 92 w250 4x4 with 188000 miles on it, is about to give up the ghost.
I pulled the pan last night and found that the previous owner had lined the pan with magnet strips. There's an awful lot of big shavings on them too.
I believe when I tear it down it will show extreme wear through out the case and VB.
It's been a long time time since I've done this kind of work so I am looking for feed back on whats out there as far as total rebuild kits and whos putting out the best rebuilt or 'remanufactured' trannys.
Out here in Colorado theres ATS but, I've heard some serious complaining about there transmissions over the last 2 years.Plus I can't even touch one for less than $3500 with a converter.
By the way the trans in my truck is a 3 spd w/ o.d.
so I believe that makes it a 518/ 618(diesel)

Opinions on who's auto tranny is better usually starts wildfires.

IMHO If you get a good converter... and a VB from any of the good vendors you would be good to go.

I have spent HOURS on the phone with Dave Goerend. If I were to do it I would use his stuff (VB/Converter)

My uncle has a full DTT. Its an awesome tranny.

There are a few other less expensive converters out there that work well. Couple that with a trans-go vb kit, you can rebuild for about 1000 bucks. I cannot however think of the names of the few converters I have read that work.

Next suggestion would be do a search in the 1st gen section on converters.

Yep, it's an A518 AKA 46RH. The above is good advice. A good valve body or a shift kit will let the trans hold the power, but it won't ever make it there without a good converter.

A lot of the 1st gen guys are using Hughes converters. It's a good unit for the price. The Trans-go shift kit is popular too.

I went DTT. They were a little more than some, but they have a local guy here that does excellent work and I got to help. The education was worth every penny and the torque converter pulls very well. I plan on getting new dyno numbers in June. He reccommended for me to get a 47rh and rebuilding it for in the future. It handles more torque than the A518 and uses a lock up torque converter. So far I haven't done that.
