auto tranny issues

My friend has a 93 w-250 with 518 tranny. It started doing something funny today. When accelerating, light or hard, it will get into third gear and without giving it more gas it trys to shift back into second. Makes a nice bang and sounds like the motor is revving WAY up. He wants to get a good torque converter and valvebody for it. It has 190 injectors and a few turns on the fuel screw with stock fuel pin to max depth. What would you guys recomend to handle this power. Whats best brand, price comparison etc.......Or could there be something out of adjustment? I can build most anything, but automatic transmissions are still black magic. Thanks!!

Check out the TV cable, and make sure it is full of fluid.

The general choice for converters seems to be Georend, I just purchaced one (15 blade left hand as he called it) for my 518 . I got mine on sale for $550 plus shipping I think the normal price is $650 plus shipping, Dave said it will handle 500 hp before you would feel any tq slippage.

Are you sure its not dropping from OD to 3rd gear?

Ryan, how was the shipping cost for the converter? Did Dave charge you the $300 core charge for your old converter on top of the $550 cost? If you don't send your old converter in to have redone, then you just buy a new converter from him, and you send him your old converter when you get done with the install. I think that's the way it goes from reading somewhere in another post and then when he receives your old converter you get the $300 back. Is that the way it works when buying from Goerend? Either way I do think $550 for an awesome (probably consider the best) aftermarket converter is the way to go. You may have just referred me to go buy one now!

The problem was the overdrive. It was completely disengaging and the re-engaging and thats what the bang was. The tranny shop said the overdrive was destroyed inside. The "banging" was enough force to twist the mainshaft! Its got everything rebiult in it and the tranny shop builds their own torque coverter, so we had a good tight one made for it. grabs better but truck just doesnt rev up past 2200 rpm. More on that issue here https://www.dieseltruckresource.com/...d.php?t=225148
Thanks for the info guys!

Jet100, thank you for the answer to my question and I gladly appreciate it. Looks like I'll be buying a Goerend when I go to buy my converter. Yippie!
