Arrrrgh, Dang IRS!!!
Well, IRS + Last year's raise = no EDMs for me this year.
I had saved up good chunk o' change to do the last stage of my modding this summer, hoping to spring for a really nice new turbo and some EDMs, but Uncle Sam put a stop that real quick after I finished doing the taxes last night. Guess I shoulda increased my witholding, huh?
So, back to reality. I'll have the intake stuff (except for that!) all finished soon with a new PS IC, 3" tubing, etc. and wondering how the ol' stock H1C is gonna fare. I'm suspectnig I'll lose some boost and increase lag a bit with some unknown level of overall volume increase in the intake tract. Does that seem likely?
If so, I'm considering what to do about it. Would a cheap eBay HX35 at least compensate for the time being? How much better do you think the HX35 with a 12cm wastegated housing would be for my application, under the circumstances?

Sorry about the taxman...that always is a bummer. What's your elevation? How fast do you usually drive? With the 4.10's you're (IMO) right on the outer edge of being able to use a 12cm effectively. There are no cheap hx35's on ebay...and if you find one, you really don't know what you're getting. My h1c center section is original and is putting up with all the abuse I can throw at it....I think you'd be $$ ahead throwing an HTT comp housing on what you've got and running it.
Your egt's should drop, so what about just turning up the pump a little more? I don't know how far you already have it, but you should be able to account for any more lag/less boost that way.
No gearing issues with the Gear Vendors OD anymore. And I think you're probably right Greg. Guess I'm just trying to cheap out now that I'm broke again. I was thinking if I found a decent one for less than $200, that would be the way to go. What are the real differences between a StageIII and the HX35, just strictly flow-wise?
Didn't think about turning up the pump. But I'm reticent to do that any more just because I don't like blowing alot of smoke. Guess that makes me a little weird around here!
I only recently backed out the smoke screw another turn to get it down to a small puff pulling out and on upshift if I keep my right foot in check.

Stage 3 = 60mm comp wheel inducer
Both have the same exducer and both have MWE slots
Stage 3 flows more efficiently at higher boost levels. Keeps EGT's down and you get more air (instead of heat) in the cylinders.
I had a feeling something like that would be the case. Just can't understand why I keep seeing posts about what a great upgrade the HX35 is for a 1st gen. If the H1C also has a 56mm wheel, then there really is no difference on the compressor side? For $225, seems like a no-brainer to go with the compressor upgrade in most cases.
Yeah I don't see the HX35 as a good upgrade either unless you have the non-i/c style H1C (50mm inducer) and want a 12cm exhaust housing also. But if you have the i/c style H1C (54mm inducer) its really not much of an upgrade at ALL unless you want the 12cm housing too. I would keep the stock 18.5cm housing and buy a copmpressor upgrade. It will flow more air on both sides of the turbo then an HX35 will and for less money.

So is there a BIG gain to be had in upgrading my PDR hx-35 to either the stage 3 4 or 5 HTT stuff? I have run a 14 and a 16 and the 18.5 housing's and I like the 18 the best with what have...If stage 5 is the best what do I get and about how much is it? thanks
i dont see the hype in the HX35 either i love the StageIII with the 12wg and i have an auto, a stick could benne from that
good luck finding a stage III HTT is sold out and they say it will prob stay that way get the IV anyway

There is a substantial gain. You go from having the compressor flow for a 5.9 cummins to the compressor side flow of an 8.3 cummins. It's made to push a lot more air. (Stock settings of course) Now the benefits of a real HX40 is the turbine side... much better breathing for the exhaust. But regardless, if you don't plan on upgrading your whole turbo someday to a 4" outlet style, then get the biggest compressor for the 3" outlet turbos. The bigger it is, the cooler your EGT's will be and more power will be had.
