Anyone have a High-idle setup?

I have read about people having them but i was wondering how they would be setup on a 1st gen? I bet some of you truck drivers have good ideas on how to do it...

I still think a GM fast idle solenoid and a homemade bracket and a toggle switch would be just the ticket, the solenoids are adjustable by turning the plunger in or out so you could get the optimum speed for you.

I use these on all of ours :

http://www.awdirect.com/exterior-thr...tx15/throttle/

The trick to a good throttle connection is to use a section of chain to connect to the actual throttle-lever, such that the chain is some longer than the maximum travel of the foot-throttle; thus, when you use the foot-throttle, the chain just comes and goes, without binding the rigid hand-throttle cable.

In other words, fasten the engine end of the cable securely, then connect the cable to about a six-inch length of pocket-watch chain or the like, and connect the chain to the throttle-lever at the pump, such that there is just barely any slack when everything is at rest.

The chain idea is what i needed to hear. i was trying to think of a way just to push the throttle from the backside, see what im saying? But the chain idea is good.

Just remember you guys with pump pretty close to runaway its easy to make it go with just a little throttle. My 89 will take right off if the rpm's get above 1400 or so. I have a cable in that truck and always used it but now I don't since I wound the screws.

Yes, they did have some high idle cables that went behind the pedal. The cable simply moved a lever that in turn moved the pedal. The 2 Ive seen were on ol Dodges that had dump beds and snow plows..........

They only offer them in 89 and 90 and only with the standard tranny. I assume after that they got scared that people would use them as a poor mans cruise control and took that option away.

The son's 1990 5-speed is equipped with one of those factory cables that works with the foot-pedal.

It is better than no throttle at all, but lacks the finesse of a true throttle-cable.

Also, a genuine throttle-cable can be used to drive the truck in the event that the foot-cable becomes dis-abled; not so with the ones that simply hold down the foot-pedal.

I have a brand-new vernier cable like the ones I linked to earlier that is soon going in his truck.

We will, however, leave the factory unit as-is, and just have both.

So your truck will run away if you rev it over 1400 rpm? I don't know where you are going with this. Thanks.

My truck will go to 3600 rpm's at very little throttle. I have the pump pretty well maxed as far as I dare. What can happen when your on the edge, as far as pump settings, is you pull the throttle stop out and walk away from the truck and as it warms up the idle comes up a little more and before you know it your truck is by itself turning big revs.
