Ammeter Gauge

This may sound pretty stupid but I just noticed that my ammeter gauge doesn't work. It just stays in the middle the whole time but im pretty sure its suppose to move. Have any ideas of where i can check to diagnose the problem?
Thanks Kevin

only time mine moves is where the grids cycle- otherwise it stays put. I would say don't touch it. just my .02

Our trucks have Voltmeters, not Ammeters. Although it's common to get the 2 confused. An Ammeter shows rate of charge...how many Amps are flowing one directing (charging) or the other (discharging). Ammeters do fluctuate quite a bit depending on what the battery needs at the time. For instance, we could see up to 120 Amps of charge for a short time on ours. A volt meter just shows what voltage the system is currently opperating at. Most vehicle systems shoot for something like 14-14.6 volts. And try and keep it there. That's why our guages don't really move around. They do dip down quite a bit when the grids kick on. But you already knew that since your lights get so dim when that happens that you have to stick a Mag-Lite out the side window to help

My truck does have an Ammeter not an Voltmeter it shows charging or not charging and it NEVER moves its always in the middle so im pretty confident that it doesn't work. This is a Canadian truck for the record so maybe its just the American trucks that have the voltmeters then

Ahhhh, well I've learned something! Guess I don't really know what could be wrong. Could be the guage itself. Or perhaps a wire has come loose depending on what type of ammeter it may be.

Up to 89 they have ammeters. 90+ have a voltmeter. Most of the 90+ work. Most of the 81-89 don't. My 89 is Canadian too with speedo head and other parts swapped around so I know how fast I'm going lol.
