Try a pick a part . I got a nice one from a gasser of the same vintage at Kar Bashers for 20 bucks. It seems like most of them from that vintage are the same except for the pulley which is easy to change if you have long nose pliers to get the circlip out of the recess. I use propane as the refrigerant so I don't mind a little experimentation.

According to my Factory Service Manual, and the on-line part vendors, ALL the Dodge trucks used a C-171 compressor. Only the clutch and/or pulley are different. If this is true, what would stop me from buying the $150 compressor to fit a V8 Dodge truck, then installing my current diesel clutch and pulley? This should save me about $700, not including my time and special tools needed to remove clutch assembly.

Sounds like a plan to me.

My '98 Dakota 318 pickup has the same compressor as the Ram. Same thing for the alternator except that the field plug is different, uses terminals. Some gas jobs use the same alternator, plug and all, just change the pulley. If it says Ram diesel, the cost is twice to three times as much for the same part.

Are you sure about that?

My '92 FSM states: "The seven piston SD-709 compressor is used on all vehicles except the Heavy-Duty 5.9L model. The six cylinder C-171 compressor is used on the Heavy-Duty 5.9L model".

Above seems to be contradicted by the PartsAmerica website tho. A quick look at some of the compressor parts available for a '93 W350 TD suggests that there may be 3 types, the 2 already mentioned and an FX80. Here's the link .

My ’91 FSM states: “The six cylinder C-171 compressor is used on all models.” I’m not saying it’s true, that’s just what the book says.

I have decided to pay the dealer to perform the repair. $300 for a Mopar reman compressor w/ clutch (best price around), another $220 in misc. parts, labor, and recharge. 12 month warranty on compressor if they install it. I think the $150 they want for labor is worth it for my troubles plus a warranty.

DDD, that's a great price! Must be nice. Probably cost double that in my area, which is why I'd rather DIY. Even if it is just stop-gap (good for another season).

In case somebody else searches for info on the compresser in the CTD trucks.

For the 91 year there is also a 'Service Manual Supplement/Diesel Engine' (# 81-370-1108A)

It has updates for the 91 model year and includes a section for rebuilding the air conditioning compressor. The compressor is the Sanden 7-piston SD-709 model

I'm currently gettting all the parts together to replace everything, except for the compresser and evaporator, and switching to 134A. Also going to update the cut-off switch to also include a high pressure cut-off for the conversion. I'll post info once I get everything sorted out if anybody is interested

OK! Everyone I just went through this nightmare... The Dodge FSM says all Dodge trucks use a C-171 compressor. That is true except diesels, they use a Sanden SD709. The difference is the location of the freon lines, the 709 has the lines in the rear and the 171 has the lines entering on the top. JW Paschal at AMC OE Air Parts out of Graham, TX has the least expensive price for a remanufactured Sanden SD709 at $315 for my truck. JW is a stand up guy. I ended up replacing my entire A/C system and heater core. The link to the compressor is listed below.
I did run into one major problem. My fan clutch wasn't engaging the fan enough to draw a proper amount of air across the new condenser to keep the high pressure side from going critical at idle. I went through two fan clutches at NAPA before I went to Cummins for help(no help, no listings). I then went to Dodge and apparently they found a problem with the OEM fan clutches. Long story short, had to buy a new (different) fan and new(different) fan clutch.($276 for both). What a racket.
Hope this helps!
Joseph
