Adding Cigarette Lighters?
Adding Cigarette Lighters?
Well, in today's world I've decided that it would be really useful to add a few cigarette lighter sockets to my truck, so I wouldn't have to keep swapping around power cables from my pull-out ash tray all the time. I'm thinking to go out to the junk yard, pull off 3 sockets with the wiring and such attached, attach all three to a bezel of some kind, mount the bezel under the glove compartment and then wire in all the sockets.
Is this possible? Where could you draw the power off of?
What kind of cars had cigarette lighter sockets that popped out really easy?

If you're doing it under the glove compartment just splice them to the factory cigarette lighter that's already in your truck. I use the power wire off that ash tray for a few things already
It's fairly close and easy to get to.

i put two in the ash tray, then i ran a line in from my aux battery to power the lighter sockets and the radio. comforting to think if i leave stuff on ill still be able to start in the moring.
Harbour Freight sells a 4 outlet deal with a lighter plug on the end. I removed the plug and wired it into the truck with a fuse. It fits perfectly under the heater vent and doesn't slide around.
Here's a link to a 3 outlet version

RV dealers and camping stores sell outlets that are made to be flush mounted in cabinets. With a little shiming and some strong adhesive they would look like they grew anywhere you cared to put them. If you're going to plug a lot of crap in, run a seperate wire off the battery with a fuse or a self resetting circuit breaker.
