Because they crack between the valve seats and the injector bores.

Here's the original 9mm.

Notice how the bore for the 9mm injector cheats into the intake valve's seat? That's the inherent weakness of the 9mm head and is why they are prone to cracking there. Those cracks are why Cummins switched to 7mm in 91.5...notice how much more meat is between the injector bore and the valve seats in my new head.

I dunno, it doesn't look like there's much room for error...I've solved that problem this time around with this:

Well, I didn't really want to go through this again, but here's what I've gotten done in the past 2 hours--I'm getting a little too efficient

I REALLY hate to see this $100.00 gasket go to waste

I'm not going to say what I did with a once torqued down head gasket.

Mike, did you get my PM?

Anyhoo, moving along...since it's all apart I'm:

Replacing front crank seal and timing cover gasket.
----oh, the couple hidden timing case bolts were HAND TIGHT on my rig---

Removed the insulation over the tappet cover...it's oil soaked and will not make the return trip to the engine bay. Removed the tappet cover to re-seal..it was a cork gasket and does NOT want to come off the block without a fight!

Pulled the IP. Removed the industrial AFC housing and put my spare with the ground AFC lever back on. The industrial AFC throttle was never meant to be cycled like an on-road unit. I don't really want the ground foot, but with the weenie 7mm stockers I'll be stuck with for a while, it shouldn't be too bad.

I'm TRYING to remove the vacuum pump/ps pump assembly to clean and diagnose an oil leak, but I can't get the bottom bolt---any tips?!

I'm not much into bling, but I'm polishing the valve covers, intake plate and horn. The rest of the engien will be Cummins Grey.

Inner fenderwells will be cleaned and tidied up.

Heavier gauge wire from the relays to the headlights.

New engine mounts.

etc etc etc

Moving right along...

Well, I know I like pictures of everyone's work in progress, so I'm gonna assume that you all like like them tooAs usual, I've bit off waaay too many projects at once, so progress is slow. If it runs by Monday, it'll be a miracle It's cleaning up nicely, though. I still can't get the lower bolts for the vacuum pump

Using a puller and the intake horn bolts to pull the pump gear:

Tappet cover insulation removed:

Tappet cover insulation---yuk!

Starting to look like it belongs in a dozer:

Replaced AFC housing and cleaned up the compressor housing on the turbo:

Yeah, there's cookies everywhere. The shelter is from shelterlogic, I think. It's my moms....the wife and I are staying here while building our house. It's 20X30 I think. On a day like today it's great because it's like a greenhouse...prolly 55 degrees. In the summer, though, you can't even walk in it
