ABS Modulator

So I'm going to redo my brakes and I was thinking... do I need those ABS Modulator things? What do they do? The ones I have are rusted very bad and my ABS light is constantly on. I was thinking about just running the brakes right from the master cylinder to the calipers.

If you're running a 1st Gen, ABS is only on the rear brakes.

Odd.. from the master cylinder it goes into an ABS modulator. From that it goes to the two front disc brakes. FRom the modulator another lines runs to another modulator which does the rear.

Front and rear circuits are seperate, except that they both go through a valve called a combination valve located on the frame roughly under the master cylinder. This valve is present whether ABS brakes or not. It has two purposes. One is to hold off the front brakes till the rear brakes start to engage and pressure builds up. The other is to compare the front and rear brake pressures and set an error switch on if there's a large difference.

From there are two lines to the front brakes, and one line that goes to the RWAL valve.

There is no ABS on the front brakes, only on the rear.

I would suggest you get yourself educated on brakes before you start deleting things.

Aye, I think I'm missing things from the get go. If I need to replace them I'll do just that. Really isn't that big of a deal. I think the brakes are messed up the more I look at this. I own a fsm so hopefully they have the way these things are layed out.

The ABS controller has "error codes" that you can trigger by grounding the wire that is taped to the harness near the controller behind the gloveless box. The FSM will tell you what the codes are.

So there are two different modules. The ABS module is in the front which equalizes and boosts the pressure. The RWAL module is in the back which does the same thing. Anyone have the rockauto part numbers?

The front one is not ABS. It doesn't boost anything. It just holds off the front brakes a bit till the long slow rear hydraulic circuit starts to build up pressure.

You said you have the manual. Read it.

The parts guy at rockauto said there is an ABS unit in the front and back called "ABS modulator" and "ABS Hydraulic unit controller".

I just went through the manual and there is a controller valve present in the front which basically prevents the rear from locking up. I take it there is a sensor(s) between the two that detects pressure and applies the affects of it?

I'll just get what he says.. maybe the naming changed.

The one in front is the proportioning valve, although Dodge calls it a combination valve, because it is combined with the brake light on the dash. The are used on combination disk/drum systems to compensate for the difference in stopping power. The modulator is the "dump" valve for the rwal system. Although they are not both directly abs parts they certainly effect each other. My experience is that the proportioning valve rarely goes bad...Mark
