HX-40 on an '89. Will it work?

Alright guys, I have been rounding me up some stuff to make my rig breath better. So far I have a stock intercooler to put on my '89 and I have traded for a four inch exhaust system. I am gonna have to fab up a downpipe and I have found a guy who has a used HX-40 turbo off a '99 model Dodge Cummins. My question is will a HX-40 work on my '89? Also, does the HX-40 have a four inch outlet? Thanks alot!

From what Ive heard an HX40 requires quite a bit of fuel. Yes they have a 4" outlet.

If you turn the pump up enough, the non-intercooled injectors will be able to run the HX-40.

BTW, do you know that the intercooler will not work with our factory radiator? The radiator is wider than the tubes of the intercooler, so you have to go with a wider intercooler, or a narrower radiator, like a crossflow from 91-93. I found this out after I bought an intercooler setup also.

Rbrettctd, I did not know that. But, I have been looking for a reason to replace my radiator. I like the crossflows a whole lot better. Wanna, how much should I consider tweaking my pump with a HX-40 tacked onto my rig? Right now my pump has been turned up about 20% by a Cummins tech. I think I can get the 40 worth the money. Will the HX-40 plus a four inch turbo back exhaust make a large difference in hp even if I can't get the intercooler on right away? Thanks alot!

I have been looking for a crossflow, and found them. But the fanshroud is hard to find...no one makes them anymore, so you have to make your own or hope you can find one at a junkyard.

Bolt it on there and turn up the pump until it spools good.

Seriously, you will have to let spoolup and EGT be your guide on how much to turn it up.

You will pick up a bunch of power with the 40, exhaust, and whatever added fuel you need to get the 40 lit.

What do you think the 40 will do for fuel mileage?

Mileage will depend on tuning. I dont think a HX40 will be that bad, especially when coming from a stock baby H1C. I had enough fuel (+50%)from my nonIC 91, I could have probably spooled a HX40; It spooled the PDR HX35 fast enough to make you forget all about turbo lag, and this was with an 18cm exhaust housing. Adding an intercooler can only make it better. With the bottom end torque capabilities of the VE'd engines, you want all the flow you can get, both in and out. If it has a 16cm housing, it should do ok.

If you go easy on the pedal, you might see an increase in MPGs, you may not. Intown MPGs may suffer, depending on how slow "intown" is. I hardly hit 50mph for more than a 1/4mi most days. Makes a tank of fuel last a month, though.

If you dont like it, you can always go back to the H1C/ HX35 platform turbos and sell the HX40.

I ran a 1st gen intercooler on my 89 with it's stock radiator. You just have to grind or sawzall a tiny bit of material from the radiator's ends. Not the core of the radiator, just the outside flat metal part. Not a big deal in any way.

Find out what exhaust housing that hx40 has before buying it. If it's bigger than a 16cm wastegated housing, don't buy it. It will be a lag pig and not worth anything with a 18 or bigger housing.

Like dpuckett said, it will depend on tuning, but I'd expect highway mileage to go up a little bit.

Thanks for the information. The guy is supposed to call me tomorrow and I am gonna take a look at the turbo. He said he thought it is a HX-45. Is there such a thing? If so, should I consider putting something like that on my 1st gen? Thanks!
