A518 rebuild
A518 rebuild
Well...My transmission is slipping pretty bad under load. When towing up hill my will hardly accelerate
. I am more than likely go with a DTT T/C due to my wallet saying so. As for the transmission I'm not so sure as to what path to take. I will take the transmission out my self and have a shop rebuild it. From ya'll experience how much money should I expect to spend. I would like to beef up the transmission a bit, but I'm not sure what parts I should look into. Could ya'll point me in the right direction as well as informing me of possible prices.
Thanks.

Carbon fiber bands, Red alto clutches, Upgrade planetary, Shift kit, upgrade shafts (alot alot of torque), triple disc converters... etc. etc.
theres lots of routes you could go... Whats your budget and plans for the truck? I'm not sure on DTT prices but Goerends a-518 conv. is $650 with an unlimited warranty and the better (3 disc) more stout converter is $950. Not sure on DTT prices, probably similar
I just had a GM 700R4 rebuit locally with some good hard parts inside for $750 so an ole torqueflite should'nt be much over that.
http://www.transmissioncenter.net/dodge.htm here is a good place to shop.. scroll down to A518 (also 46rh).. this place knows they're stuff, they offer billet shafts, 3 disc torque converters, And they'll sell you the kits to do it yourself or have it done, the clutches/bands/shift kit are good upgrade. With an aftermarket shift kit the Converter will fill in park, which it does not stock hence the reason you have to put it in N before you take off when its cold.
theres lots you can read on that site ^^^^^
hope this helps.

if your set on getting a DTT converter and see what they recommend as far as upgrading parts. Its there converter they will know what else to do to the trans.
yep, three disks won't fit between the tranny and engine without the wider adapter plate.

i myself am also in the process of rebuilding a 518. here is what i personally went with
the K3 kit from PATC. consists of a full gasket kit for the trans, new front kevlar band, red eagle clutches, koelene steels, and a trans action shift kit.
as for a converter i actually talked to dave goerend today and my converter will be in mail the next week. he is an awesome guy to talk to and he knows exactly what to recommend to you. i got the 900/400. they also make a 15 blade left hand a 15 blade and a 10 blade. thats from loosest to tightest.
the last thing i have to do is order a new strap and anchor for second gear and then put it all together and it should be ready to rip. hopefully this give you some insight into what you are looking for

A fellow could go crazy AND broke there
. Mild to wild. You're right, lots of good reading there and pictures too.
Thanks for the help. I didn't realize the Goerends went for around $650. I might check into one of those. As for as the use of the truck it is a daily driver. However, I tow my toyota rock crawler about 10 times a year when I go wheelin'. As far as rebuilding the transmission I'm still looking around for rebuild kits.
the 900/400 has something to do with the internal parts in the converter iwas told. and yes as the tightness increases the price does as well. the 900/400 and the 15 blade left hand are basically the same but the 15 blade has amplified torque coupling
