'93 Speedometer Quit
'93 Speedometer Quit
Ok,I've had this issue for a while.
I'll back out of a parking spot and start forward. The speedo may or may not start working right away.Sometimes I've got to drive 5 miles or more before it'll jump to attention.
Now,over the last 3-4 days I've had no speedo or daytime running lights at all.
I pulled the Distance Sensor off and seperated the casing, checking and greasing the gears before riviting the case back together.
I've tried searching but being on dial up with over 20 pages will take all night.
I guess tomorrow after work I'll spin the drive that goes into the tranny with a drill and see if anything registers as far as speed but any chance someone's on here tonight with any ideas?
All the fuses are good too.Been thru the Service Manual and am at a loss right now.
Thanks in advance,
Ragg

With the Getrag the speedo drive gear is held on place by being sandwiched between two spacers. Everything is held in place and tight by the nut that holds rear drive shaft yoke in place. This nut has to be very very tight. Try disconnecting the drive shaft and tightening this nut. Even 1/16th of an inch has been known to allow the speedo drive gear to slip. Off hand I don't remember the torque specs but I can get them for you - it will just take a while as I will be tied up until about 1 PM Pacific time.
This problem was first found with 4 wheel drives but is also a problem on 2 wheel drives - such as mine.
Let us know if this works for you - and good luck.

Ok,the nut's as tight as my 3/4"drive (with snipe) will get it....nothin'.
I spun the VSS drive with my drill and there's no reading on the speedo.I also checked the VSS with my multi-tester and am getting no acv reading.
I'm suspection the VSS at this point.
I'll advise when it's figured.

the VSS isn't hard to find a replacement for, you can get those at the parts store, which can normally get you one in a day if they don't have one on the shelf...not too expensive either IIRC, something like $40 or less.
now, my problem is a little deeper than yours. (though i'd look at this too since you're under the truck) the little 90* elbow with the gear reduction in it(it also has a little zirk fitting on it) has broken. specifically the the driven shaft coming from the transmission (getrag as well) into the 90* unit. i've got mine all apart (had to grind down the width of a junk 7/8" wrench to get it apart) and currently setting up with jb-weld. my question though, is what is the 90* part called and where can i get one in the aftermarket? or do i have to go to dodge? my speedometer hasn't worked since i bought my truck about a year ago...i did have that 90* part apart earlier today and put some 5 min epoxy on it...it lasted 1.5miles before it broke again...i'm hoping that my jb-weld job will hold for a few miles though.
also, is there a tech article somewhere about fixing the odometer/tripmeter? neither of those work either...my transmission was broken for about 6 months so i got to do alot of reading on how the truck works and is put together, so since it's running again i've been diving in over the last few days trying to get all my stuff working correctly again...then buy a new bed...then paint...lol

any speedo shop should be able to get you the little 90* part. I had to get a new one for my truck. That was only part of my speedo's issue's though, one of the wires in the factory plug that connects to the vss had broken, and fell out when i was installing my last vss. The vss should come with a new plug I would suggest putting it on too.

is what you're talking about the one in the picture with the yellow background?
So,this morning I need to use the truck to get to work.
I hop in,"wait to start",let it run for a bit and go to back out......the daytime running lights come ON.I turn around in the driveway and start for the main road.....woohoo,I've got a speedo again.
I have no idea what's going on with the speedo but it's working.Worked all the way to town, about 20miles.

not exactly, though it's a simliar idea, but instead of speeding the VSS up, it slows it down...i'll post up a picture of mine this evening when i get back to the house...without the 90* gear box in there, the speedo reads a solid 30mph too fast at 75mph (i realize it's a % thing, not a set number)
looks like my jb weld is gonna hold up...i just got done going around the block and was doing multiple quick accelerations and decelerations and i did about 5 miles so we'll see...i'm glad to see it's working again
