89 CTD mileage

This truck, new to me, is getting lousy mileage. I filled it up. 3:07 rears, I've got 180 miles on trip meter and I've got less than a 1/4 tank remaining. All highway miles too. Its a dump truck. Is this the norm for a dumper? automatic.

The best I got out of mine so far is 18mpg but I have a hard time keeping my foot out of the throttle. I am positive that the dump body is going to hinder the mileage out come compared to a regular pick up.

FIll the tank before you get too excited. My mom called me one day and had taken her horses 50 mi away and was getting about 5mpg. She filled the tank and it came out to about 15mpg. Her fuel gauge's sender is toast. Needle drops to "E" within 100mi. Now she just fills it every 400mi empty, or 250-300 towing

well, that dump is heavy, how long is the bed? The auto might need some love, and the fuel sender is definatly bad, mine goes to a 1/4 tank after about 8-10 gallons. With my cabover, sitting on my flatbed(waytall) I get 14-16 depending on the terrain and speed.

What is your usual driving pattern? Do you run it in cold weather? Do you drive in city traffic, stop and go? Your gears are good for economy but when driven in town may labour and require more fuel to overcome the tall gears. My '91 is a standard and gets much better fuel mileage. I get at least 17 miles per US gallon pulling a fifth wheel travel trailer. I usually count on 20 mpg in our imperial gallons pulling the trailer and around 30 at modest highway speeds unloaded. In my experience, you lose a few mpg for having a one ton, a few for the slush box, and a few for four wheel drive and a few for winter conditions. Is your air filter clean? How heavy is the dump set up? A gasoline engine or even an 8 cylinder diesel would be getting much poorer mpg. You also have a newer cummins, what mpg are you experiencing with it. Is your speedo/odometer accurate? Dodges have a reputation for having inaccurate speedo's. Mine was out 15% and is now out 6% in the other direction. I now have to add 6% to my
miles to calculate mpg.

Offtopic, but can I ask you stuff about your Eaton transmission? I've pretty much settled on some kind of medium-duty manual for my truck but it's a matter of figuring out which one exactly, and what to get it out of...
