727 Tranny help
727 Tranny help
Ok. I got the tranny hooked up to the driveshaft and the engine. Engine idling I put in about 8-9 quarts of ATF. Put it in Neutral to let it slosh around some more. Check the ATF, normal. Put it into Drive and Reverse, nothing. No movement whatsoever. Could this be from the lack of a TV cable, the right rear wheel being locked up, or because the converter might be shot? No load seemed to be on the engine. Increased RPM's dramatically but nothing.

hmmmm.... theres alot of questions to ask to figure that one out, heres a few, did you just rebuild the trans? or is it stock? have u adjusted the front drum band?(small screw in a 3/4 nut right above the shifter linkage on the trans? does it evben feel like your changeing gears when you run from park to first?

AFAIK, it is a stock trans that I got from another guy, came out of a 90 D250 with a Cummins.
No it does not feel like it is shifting between gears.
I put in that much fluid and nothing more is being sucked up into it. Stays just a hair short of the full mark.

No, I had given it 4qts before starting. It sucked it up and I gave it 4 more quarts. I know it was sucking as the cooler wasn't fully hooked up and it was leaking out of one of the hoses. Then I just put in 5 more quarts and nothing seems to be getting sucked up. I also just changed the pan gasket and the tranny filter too.

When you pulled the tranny, did you drain the TC?
That thing holds 2 - 3 qts by itself.
The way you say it seems to be sucking fluid, I'd think the TC is just filling up.
Remenber the TC will not fill unless you run the tranny in Neutral for a while.

don't know if you're a rookie at chryco tranny installation but a common mistake is not getting the converter all the way back when bolting the tranny on and shearing off the drive lugs on the pump rotor. sometimes it will then turn enough to suck some fluid but wont generate enough pressure do anything.
txs, if that is the case, then how do I check it?
I put the TC on the shaft, pushed it as far back as possible, bolted the tranny to the engine, bolted the flexplate to the TC.
The linkages are fine and adjusted right.
I hope it is not the TC.
ANyone know where to get a good converter for under $500???

Ok, looks like I might need a new tranny. So here is the deal.
I was offered $300 to get another take-out tranny but it is a 4x4 727, I need a 2wd. By the time I pay for that and gas to get it (around $100-$200) I think I could get the 700R4 that I have lying around built up for some decent HP. Here is what I was thinking. OD+Lock-up+Low 1st Gear+3.07+265/70/R16=some good ole FUN!
I have access to a machine shop and can get a engine plate made up....
