Proper procedure for band adjustment is:

For the kickdown band:

loosen lock nut
tighten adjuster to 72 in lbs
back off adjuster approx. 2 1/4 turns
tighten lock nut

For the low-reverse band:

loosen lock nut
tighten adjuster to 72 in lbs
back off adjuster approx. 2 turns
tighten lock nut

proper procedure may be the best way to do things, but this old man knows that a lot of people working on their vehicles do not have torgue wrenches or the proper tools to do the job. 40 years experience on torgue-flites i have found that the book is just a starting point. find what works and if] possible k.i.s.s.

Exactly, cause it's pretty difficult to keep the adjustment at 2 1/4 turns out AND torque the lock nut back.
