Isn't there a rumor floating around that the 727 convertor is much tighter than the 518's?

Thanks Free89!! Not sure which is tighter, its my understanding both of them suck stock!! I am looking into a used aftermarket converter which should be better either way. Havent got the truck yet and have never driven a 1st gen auto.

Crossy's son swears up and down the stock 727 convertor is pretty good (for stock).

Consider the source. Not hatin' on Brandon but his experience is somewhat limited at this point.

Yeah, i swear the 727 converters take more abuse and are tighter then a 518 converter, saying that because our 91 D250 727 truck had some good mods and got the snot beat out of it and this 518 in the 93 4x4 we have is bad, engine just makes noise and smoke and goes nowhere and we just now modded it after 175k.

c12h26 on this forum ran a 13.9 in a 91 D250 with a 727, it had pump 'maxed' out, ground pin, 5" exhaust and a water-air intercooler, 366 spring, and he welded the rear and ran a 13.9 with a stock 727 converter and many more passes, I saw with me own eyes!! stock trans, stock turbo, stock inj.

That tells you how tight it is, I have yet to see a 518 truck run 13's with a stock converter. and everyone complains about how sloppy there 518 converters are and My dad and I are one of them.

should of never sold that 91, it would do a 350ft one wheel burnout and even won a burnout contest trophy at englishtown and ran 15.3 all day in the 1/4., onemoparnut was there

I still swear by 727 converters....but thats just I. I only sit in the passenger and ride since I don't have my license.

Either way don't put a stocker in whether its a 727 or 518. lol

Dave I thought you were the first one to tell My dad and I that the consensus was most people get more out of 727 converters then 518's.. but I'm not holding you to that. may not have been you.

brandon, i think one thing you may have to consider is what the previous owner/owners of the truck may have done to it before you. That is unless if you own the truck since new.

Exactly. You can't compare two different trucks that have had two completley different ways of being used.

I'm sure it isn't that big of a difference if there is one, but both stock converters are junk anyways, so it doesn't really matter, in my opinion.

i was thinking along the lines of previous owners adding parts, such as a tighter converter.

well the silver/blue truck with the 727 had 302k and we bought it from the orig. owner and he just put a shift kit in it when it was in the truck, never towed, never raced.

the 93 has 172k on it of flat towing from PA to texas.

so you guys are probably right....

I can tell you from experience the 92 of mine with the a518 auto is just plain doggy. The ole truck has some pretty good mods to it and it still won't overcome the auto trans. The trans and converter both may be bad, but it shifts good and doesn't slip soooo with that said who knows. I won't spend a penny on the trans or converter just getting the rest of stuff for the NV4500 c/o. I'm an old school stick man and if the auto did everything it is supposed to do and worked great i'd still c/o to a stick. JMO though. Good luck with your truck though.

Yea it has short tires and 3.55's.

Its a turd, He took it off the road and is driving a 90 D150 with a 5.2 TBI

the 93 is on craigslist and if it sells we're eyeing a local 5 speed truck.. blah blah. Autos stink.
