a 518 od problems

Hi this is my first diesel and my first post. I just baught a 92 3/4 ton 4/4 i got a good price but it needs some TLC. my main problem is the overdrive. the transmissiod works great until it shifts into od it will go in for a couple of seconds then kick out then kick back in a while and back out it will keep doing this. but if i stop and mat the gas pedal it will work just fine until you let off at about 95mph i have to let off! i have changed the filter and fluid it only has 2 wires on the plug so i think in is a nonlock up tq i knew it had this problem when i bought it only had to fork up $1200.00 it has 202348 miles if any one can help me that would be great it is a truck i have always wanted i guess if i need to pull the trans i will i just want to make sure it wasent some thing stupid or am i proling the work!!! thanks

Sounds like yur TPS is on the fritz. You can adjust on it til the cows come home (and probably not fix the problem), replace it with a new one (big $$), or install a potentiometer in it's place (what I finally did). Look in the "sticky" at the top for detailed info on the subject. Oh, and welcome to this great site!

BigHose,
Check all your electrical connections at teh OD govenor adn at teh TPS, they can get loose and corroded.
The TPS can be cleaned, or may be outof adjsutment, instrutcions for how to do both are in teh Stickey, but odds are that the TPS has gone out and needs replaced.
I priced one recently at $325....I would recommend the Pot mod, instruction are also in teh "stickey"

There isnt any reason to pull the trans for the OD problem!!
If adjusting and cleaning the TPS doesnt fo it, then do teh POT mod described in teh Stickey..

Also, if you click on 'user CP" in teh header bar and fill out your signature with your truck info, it makes it easier to answer questions...
