4x4 w/ 2wd 5 speed and divorced NP205?

4x4 w/ 2wd 5 speed and divorced NP205?

has anyone done this, or thought about doing this?

it seems like finding a 29 spline 205 can be a bit of a daunting task.

divorced 205's seems to be floating around everywhere for a reasonable price.

obviously it would require some fabrication to mouth the T-case.

does anyone see any other possible problems?

who knows if the U-joints would match up? would it be difficult to change them if they didnt?

just tossing the idea out... lately it seems unless you can find a cheap 5speed donor truck to get all the parts from you will have to spend and arm and a leg to get it all together.

I just did a 5 speed swap in my auto truck and I was gonna use a rebuilt 2wd getrag I had layin around with a divorced t case. I looked at some optioins and I found alot of yokes that would go on thee tcase and after calling junkyard after junkyard I found the right yoke/tcase combo.

i ran a divorced 205 in my old ford behind a 2wd getrag for a year before switching to nv4500/married t-case. actually worked great. made a short drivline betwwen the 2

I have a 74 power wagon laying around with a divorced t-case in it. Guys correct me if im wrong but arent the older ones chain driven? Would they last like the gear driven that came in our trucks? Atleast if you tow alot? Just curious.

All the older 205's were gear to gear just like ours in the 1st gen's... But they did make a 208 that looked similar to the 205 that was a chain case. I have afew out in the back 40!! They are heavy ****'s let me tell ya..

BUt as far as putting a divorced 205 behind a 5 sp, that would be awesome.. Just need to make a cross member for the case.. you'd have lots of options too, big lift and good driveshaft angles!!

There's a fella just over the hill from me that converted a d350 to a w350 dump and used a divorced 205. I can try and get some pics if anyone's interested.

No fabrication needed... All you need to do is take the mounting crossmember out of a 1972-1973ish 4x4 w100-w400 truck and bolt it into yours! The original is riveted in.

I'll let you know how it goes, but I've got this setup completely installed in my 1972 W200 Crew cab. you can get 1410 yokes all around for the divorced np205s, as the shafts are all 32 spline. They are the heavy geared units like our married np205s in our factory diesels.

I think you mean a 203 and yes they are heavy ****'s and are a full time unit, the 208 is an aluminum case and very lightweight and will handle moderate gasser horsepower

Your thinking of the NP203 which is a cast iron case like the NP205, the NP208 is an all aluminum case, chain drive, similar to the 2nd Gen T-cases.

After you do the devorce, 2wd getrag into the factory NP205.

What would you do for a front drive shaft??? the transfercase would be so much farther back...

So custom driveshafts would be needed right?? or do i not understand what a divorced transfercase is...

Yes, You would have to do some work with the shafts, But with a divorced case on a lifted truck you wont have near the driveline angle problems you would with a married case

Yeah your right. A divorced set up works nice if you have a lifted truck. front driveline angle isn't so steep and still not too bad in the back since our trucks are all longer wheel base. I always wondered if you could just use a U joint to connect the 2 instead of a short driveline.

I forgot to add its a lot easier to drop the case to aleviate some angle problems with it divorced also

A friend of mine took a 1972 w300 and a 1990 d250 and made it work. The thing was a tank with 4.88 rears. The truck was engine, tranny, cab and electrical a 1990 and frame, t cast, and rears a 1972.
