checked that plug as well as the wireing going to the light at the dash i just thought someone may have run into this before [maybe the switch at the transcase itself ?]

I haven't had the exact problem you describe. However, my dash indicator light didn't work at all, so I got under there and pulled the switch from the top of the transfer case to check it. Sure enough, it was bad. My guess is that's where your problem is.
It's a little tough to get to... I pulled my exhaust over with a ratchet strap as far as I could so I could actually squeeze my head up in there and SEE the switch. This helped a lot, as I could sweep the dirt away from around the switch before removing it, so it didn't fall into the case.
Replacement switch somewhere between $20 and $25 from dealer. Switch has 2 pins, NOT 4.
