It stays on most of the time. Sometimes it comes and goes. what needs to be done to fix this?

I really hope this isnt the cause, but is it in 4x4? If so, take it out. Lock-in-out hubs, year of truck, etc, may help with an answer. J/k.

MoparMarv, I just re-read my post and it came across wrong, I think. Does the light stay on ALL the time, or does it flicker off and on while in 4 WD?

Marv, the light should be on all the time you have the transfer case in 4HI or 4Lo. the sensor for this is located on top of the transfer case and is a two wire connector. It can get covered in grime and crud pretty easily, and if the light is flashing or on intermittantly, I would suspect you have a bad connection there. Try cleaning this connector, and applying a liberal dose of dielectric grease to the connector when you hook it back up and see if that doesnt solve this.

Its a 1993 with 5spd. The hubs are in free wheel. I have only used it in 2wd since i got it. The light doesn't flicker its usally off when i first start it and then as I drive a little it comes on. Its on more than its off. I was wondering if the switch that turns it on goes out of adjustment or something. I asked the prior owner and he said it was doing the same for him.

Before work I moved the selector thru all the drives. The light stays on. Never even hinted at going out. I did get it into Netural so I guess that the lever is all conected still. I am not familar with this 4wd set up. Is the movement between 4hi and 2 hi very short? Like maybe 2 inches at the most probally less.

Most likely the wire is rubbing against something or frayed and shorting giving you the false indication. Check the wiring from the switch on the T-case on back. Once it gets inside a thick harness or inside the cab it's probably OK.

My backup lights are flakey for the same reason but I haven't got after that yet due to the necessity of jacking up truck and laying on the ground.

Yes from 4h to 2h is very short. Did you put it in what you thought was neutral then put the trans in first gear and attempt to move? If it doesn't then the t-case is truely in neutral. A way to check for another issue in the t-case is while the t-case is in neutral or 2h, and front hubs unlocked, the front driveshaft should turn freely by hand and not move going down the road.
