2nd gen downpipe on 1st gen?
2nd gen downpipe on 1st gen?
Any reason why, assuming you have the cast iron elbow thingy off the 2nd gen turbo, that a 2nd gen downpipe couldn't bolt on a 1st gen truck?
Re:2nd gen downpipe on 1st gen?
I am pretty sure that the cast iron elbow will fit onto the turbo flange, and of course you can bolt the down-pipe to the elbow, but I think the pipes themselves are of reasonably different shapes. I actually would like confirmation regarding my first premise as well, if anyone out there knows definatively.

Thanks,

Alec
Re:2nd gen downpipe on 1st gen?
Yeah, I figured it could be bolted up, I'm just wondering if the 2nd gen pipe interferes with the frame or something. It seems like a simple way for me to get a true 4" exhaust all the way to a 5" stack. I can't believe nobody's tried this before - anybody?
Re:2nd gen downpipe on 1st gen?
I've got a down pipe off a 98 laying around and I'm sure it would not work without modifing. The cast elbow makes a 45 or 50 deg turn where as the 1st gen DP does a hard 90. The tranny dipstick would have to be reworked (if you have an auto) and the pipe would hit the firewall. Not sure what else.

BTW The down pipe I have is only 3". Not sure if they made a stock 4"

Re:2nd gen downpipe on 1st gen?
Yes, the 2nd gen downpipe will need modifications to allow it to wind it's way down. You'll likely find that you'll need to transplant a 2nd gen dipstick tube if your truck is an auto.
You'll also have to cut/weld the elbow portion of the downpipe ( I think ) to make it miss the firewall. Also there is the heat shield problem as well. You'll need some kind of heat blanket or something to protect the rubber cowling were the AC/heater core is on the firewall.

As far as PDR offering 4" back systems,... they do, but the error I made was that they are individual systems built for the truck as it sits on the shop floor. They do not yet have shippable "kits".
These sytems are based on the work nascar mark did when altering/installing a 2nd gen setup.
My brother has just had mark at PDR build/install a true 4" system straight pipe on his truck with a 5" tip.
Man that sucker is some awesome sound when he loads up the HX 35 I installed last week.
My apologies for the error regarding the "kit" availability. As of this time, it's not sold on that basis but on a 1 of a kind for each truck.
Sorry guys... my mistake..

Bob.

I had a - 3" - 2nd Gen. down pipe on my '93 prior to Rip's installation of a 4" turbo back system on it. All we did on the 3" pipe was to wrap it in heat sheilding. If you have an auto the dip stick tube will have to be reworked. My BD exhaust brake forms the top 45. It worked quite well. It doesa not hit anywhere on it's way down.
Bob

I don't think you'd have any problem getting a downpipe if that is what your looking for... give PDR a call and talk to Harry. He can probably arrange for PDR/Mark to send one out to you as soon as mark is back from his fishing trip...just a few days..
I've heard good things about Rip's system too....talk to him and see what you can do there just for comparison, that's only fair.

So -- just to clear this all up. My understanding from the web-sites and posts here is as follows:

Rips system uses a 3 inch down-pipe, and is 4 inches from there back.

Big Exhaust sells a system with a 3 1/2 inch down pipe and 4 inch back.

Piers has been custom bending some 4 inch exhausts that have a 4 inch down pipe??
Re:2nd gen downpipe on 1st gen?
I do make 4" downpipes for the 1st gens (not for turbo mounted exhaust brakes) and also have custom 3"-4" adapters for turbo to downpipe plus 4" V-clamp.

I have done some complete turbo to tailpipe installs in shop but won't be selling them as a complete exhaust kit. Only adapter/V-clamp/downpipe.

Contact me at PDR

1 - If you have an auto, you WILL need to move the trans dipstick out of the way of the downpipe.

2 - On a 4x4 it's real tight around the transfer case

3 - You can't use the factory downpipe support that's attached to the bellhousing.

4 - The way that the 4" downpipe from PDR is set up, the end is lower than the trans crossmember. This means that you'll have to angle it back up with an elbow to clear the crossmember. Also, it gets real close to the front driveshaft. It would be better to remove about 1.5" - 2" from the middle of the pipe to raise it up so it clears the crossmember in the first place.

Sean
