Any bad consequence to useing "diesel" with 2000 ppm sulphur in my truck? Cetane rating unknown.

hmmm, its not highway rated...

but i've got a 275 gal tank connected to my furnace...

so as long as i trailer my truck to the race track, and do not drive on public roads, i should put a few gallons in the tank and run it hard!!

 

Yea offroad diesel has more Sulfur I think

A couple years ago before the big move to ULSD, there was a local station that had the older "Low sulfur"- not the ultra low

There was even a sticker on the pump that said "Not to be used with any Diesel Vehicle newer than 2007"

 

im still looking for a place that sells on-road low sulfur diesel.. supposedly stations CAN still carry it but im finding that hard to believe... the only low sulfur diesel i can find is off road and im not going to risk the trouble it can get me into.. BUT if you keep it off the street and only on the track you can use off road diesel

 

I was told that off road and on road now have the same ultra low sulphur rating

Correct. I had 20 offshore oil rigs under me and ALL diesel fuel is made with the same process. The Detroit or Cat gensets did ok with the change over, but the 2 stroke EMD's I knoticed a difference in KW output and barrels per day fuel consumption.

Contrary to urbin myth, on and off road diesel is the same. Closest to the old diesel is heavy fuel oil and ULSD mix. Too much trouble to go thru for that though. I've ran red diesel from the rigs for alot of miles and like it only because the price difference. Usualy it was free to fill mt 94 gallon dmax. Thats 2,000 miles of driving free.

 

What I'm talking about is home heating oil. I know its still diesel with no dye, but a friend tried to scare me off the idea saying it has lower cetane and will lower HP output.

off road diesel, home heating oil and pump diesel are all the same. The only difference is the red dye in the off road and the home heating oil.

Also the only reason why when you pull up to a off-road diesel pump they don't put the Ultra low sulfur diesel sticker on it is because they haven't cleaned the tanks and certified that all the old "high" sulfur diesel has been cleaned out.

 

I agree with all but the heating oil. I thought home heating oil was more of a karosene mix. I could be wrong, but it takes alot of processing to get ULSD that clean for EPA reasons. Home heating oil is not under the same umbrella, so why would they super clean the heating oil to meet ULSD specs?

A few years ago when I lived in maine some stations had pumps for road diesel, offroad diesel, and off to the side they had heating oil that was marked as karosene.
