1st GEN. VIN NUMBER ??

I see ads for trucks that have little information, except for the VIN number.

How do I read a VIN number to tell if a truck is 5-speed??

Can I also tell if it is regular cab, extended cab, or four-door??

Thanks.

Transmission info is not in the VIN.

You can tell GVW, cab, engine, and 2wd vs. 4wd from the VIN.

4th digit tells GVW. K=8k-9k, L=9k-10k, M=10k-14k
5th digit E=2wd, M=4x4
6th digit will be 0-3. 0 and 1 are 1/2 ton, 2 is 3/4 ton, 3 is 1 ton.
7th digit tells what cab. 3= club cab, 6 = regular cab.
8th digit is engine, C and 8 are CTD codes.

The 8th digit is for the most part un-important for 1989, 1990, 1992, and 1993. HOWEVER, its very crutial with a 1991. 8 being non i/c, C being I/c'ed

I find it rather surprising that transmission ID is not in the VIN.

I am almost certain that it is part of a Ford VIN.

One of the quickest deterrents of me being interested is the lack of a manual transmission.
