So what is the next best truck compared to a 1st gen Just wandered what all the 1st Geners say from experence. My truck still runs good but Rust and wear and tear after 300,000miles is getting to it. It really needs alot of work to keep it road ready and the way I like to to be. I really just dont have it in me to tear it all apart and put it back together nor the time would love to but not sure it make financial sense. SO what the best truck and what i mean is most reliable newer cummins

 

my personal opion is that a p pumper would be the next best thing. but thats me.

but actually. If I couldn't have my first gen, one of those Toyotas is probably what my second choice would be if I didn't specifically need a full size truck.

 

That would have to be the last of the 5.9s, 06-07. The bugs were pretty much all worked out of the drivetrain by then, including the 48RE trans. There are still some easily fixed issues with the front ends, but that is about the only thing I can think of really marring those trucks. 325hp/610tq stock and a $500 tuner ups that by 100hp with only a few minutes of your time.

Pretty sweet package, IMHO. But then I'm biased, I've got an '07.

 

Don't forget the 14mpg. neighbors 06 with a 6 speed and that's the best it will do.

My next best choice would be the 97-98 with 5 speed. But I'd rip out the junk front axle and put a ford kingpin 60 in it.

 

My brother had an 06 for a few years and could get 19-20, so they aren't all crap. I wouldn't mind an '06 or early '07 like my 92. Regular cab, 4WD long box, auto, etc. I do like how the 3500 4 doors with a short box look though.

 

78 or 79 ford f250 with a cummins in it... thats my new dream truck, I seen a pic of one the other day and fell in love.

 

Buy another lower mileage First Gen from out West. California or Arizona or Nevada.

 

my grandpa's got an '03 with the nv5600 and my dad just bought an '06 with the 48re in october. my grandpa's averaged about 25mpg after an air filter change and pulling a 33' toyhauler from here to phoenix, az. before the air filter change he'd average 16-17 pulling the same trailer. my dad's averages 19-20 around town. something's gotta be wrong with your neighbor's. does he maintain it regularly?

 

The absolute next best thing to a first Gen. is another first gen like JQmile said from the south. Preferably a low mile grandpa special that was always garaged and pampered.

And yes, Toyota's are great too and there are some deals on them lately.

 

my next cummins would be either a p-thumper or an '06. maybe both to complete a 1st, 2nd and 3rd gen family

 

I've got 2 first gens and one 2nd gen. I look under the hood of the 3rd gen's and just cringe. Way too many wires and sensors if you know what I mean.

 

You say "next" like the Dodge is why we all bought these trucks! Hahaha, I bought it for the Cummins and originally to swap it! But it was too clean to throw away. I'm not very fond of cracked cowls, rotten roofs, buck board suspension, and undersized wiring. Luckily both of mine are rust free, but they both suffer from the other problems
