Should be A618

The first gen board could fill you in on all the details.

Its ok here also...What he was saying is DTR has sections for 1st gen,2nd gen,3rd gen etc trucks...Sometimes the guys that have first gens only go to the 1st gen section and may never go to the 2nd gen section...Sometimes the 2nd may not know everthing about the 1st...We just want to give you the most help...I could help a little...A fellow here has a 1992 and he said he has the 4 speed auto.....

If it's an automatic, it's an A518 (essentially a 727 3-speed with an over-drive nailed to it). The A618 is a gasser thing.

BC847 is correct. It's an A518 4 speed non lock up trans.

that's the confusing part. i've seen a518 in 1/2 tons behind a 318 gasser, too. obvously not the same thing, but says so on the tag. the a618 came in the heavier versions like motor homes and the like.

Transmission shop "specialist" argued with me that I had an A618, and that is what all the diesel's had. When he asked me how my lock up was going, I told him the Pre 94 trucks don't lock up. He told me my transmission was "just broken, and it's supposed to lock up". After that I told him I wasn't going to be needing his services after all!

So don't feel bad if ya didn't know fellas... the "pros" don't always know either!

Yeah, I have the same truck your looking at. It's a A518, 3 speed with overdrive.

I have a 92 with the A518 and as far as stout it's ok. We pull trailers with it from the little 16' utilities to 32' G/Ns weighing up to a gross of 25K. With a big load it takes a while to get up to speed but we don't just hammer on it to get going. As far as performance in stock form a weak 3 legged dog will outrun it. The guys on here who have modified theirs with torque convertors and such performs pretty well from what i'm told. But you'll like the ole trucks. Good luck with your decision.

Put a good converter in it and you'll love it.

The 94-01's 2nd gen 1500 rams with gassers got the A-518 also (weaker of course than diesel), The 94-95 2nd gen DEIESEL trucks got the A-618 (47rh)
