1 ton shivey needs cummins
Friend of mine has long wheel base 1 ton shivey 4x4 gasser, he's on his 3rd motor in 2 years. Where can I find info on a cummins swap for his truck? I went to a couple of gm sites in the links from this board, I don't think I wanna go there and ask this question as I don't have any asbestos underwear. All I gathered there was how superior the duramax and even 6.2-6.5s are to the cummins.
Go over to
www.Cummins-Conversion.com
and they will be glad to share their knowledge.
Many over there have Cummins in various kinds of Chevys; although, Ford conversions prevail; probably because, Ford offered a real diesel in their trucks several years before Dodge or Chevy and those engines are getting tired.
I swapped in a 1st Gen. Cummins, and replaced a lot of other stuff that just needed replacing, and still spent less money than a rebuild would have cost; and, I have a better truck going the route I chose.

FORDCUMMINS may have info on this.
What kind of things are you Looking for? I may be able to point you in the right direction. What Drivetrain is this guy wanting to run Chevy Or Dodge?
Those people on the Chevy Sites crack me up. I am a BIG Chevy guy but I can tell you 6.2 and 6.5 are Junk!!!!!!!!!!
If you want good power. They arn't bad in stock form, and thats the end of it.

His is a 91, the only question I need answered is how to get the cummins hooked up to his tranny, if possible. If it was 2 wheel drive it wouldn't be a problem, could use anything heavy enough to hold the torque. I was wondering about the chevy bread truck box vans, what they use for a tranny behind the 4bt? Also I have a 653 allison, but I don't think you can hook it to a transfer case.

Some of them use a TH400. So u can use just about any GM automatic trans. IMOP the only one that works well is the 4L80E. Its has OD and it is Computer Controlled, we use a TCI trans controller and it is really fun to play with.
We have toasted a few 400's behind a Cummins. I am shure if you build one you could make it hold but I Just don't feel it worth it.

It's the long wheelbase heavy duty and already has an auto with O/D, I have no idea what tranny that is. It was throttle body injection. I hope the bread truck 400t trannies had the chevy pattern, they did make 400s with non chevy bell, I.E. jeeps had 400 available with bell for jeep motor.
It sounds like he may have the 4L80e in his truck now. The bread trucks did have a GM pattern. There is a guy in Georgia we get all of our Parts from, including the starter, flywheel and web ring to connect the converter.
