Fast Idle advice for a noob

Please point me in the right direction.

As some of you may know, I'm new to DTR, fell in love with the 1st Gens. Now that I have mine I want to obviously make it better. So I'm gonna start slow.

I'm a little mechanically inclined but here it goes...

The truck idles a little high, foot off of the accellerator and pretty soon I top out at 20 mph. EGT in park never gets below 350 degrees (could this be related to idle speed?)

What I probably need to do is hook up with some of the local Phoenix area 1st Genners and get tutored on some of the basics.

The first question I have is did you turn the full power screw up and if so did you back the idle screw off. If both were done check the throttle linkage to make sure that it's not binding anywhere and that it is adjusted so the pump lever is as far back (close to fast idle screw) as possible.

Hope this is some kind of help

Ryan gave some good advice. I would go through all the throttle linkage first, as it's the more likely problem. Next I would check the low idle screw on the pump. It's a long threaded screw where the rotating pump linkage comes to rest at idle. There's also a high idle screw that looks the same, but it on the driver side of the pump. The one directly opposite that (harder to see, by far) is what you're interested in. There should be some combination of stopnuts on that screw to keep the idle setting selected. Sometimes the 'ol Cummins will rattle those stopnuts loose and the screw will thread itself in random directions, causing the idle to change. With your aftermarket converter, I'd try for a lower idle while in drive so you're not getting pushed around at stoplights.

I have owned this truck for 1 week and haven't touched anything under the hood. So currently any performance issues I am having is a result of the settings from the previous owner.

I even ground the case some to get the idle down, the lever would not go all the way back, and turning the full power screw back is not an option

From what's in your signature I bet it's turned up a bit. Set it to idle as slow as you can stand it, it'll start vibrating pretty good around 650 RPM.

You will want a bent wrench to get at the locknut.

It's a cheap 10mm combination wrench heated up and bent to fit. Used like so:

You may find that you can't back the screw out any further because the return line is in the way. This happens on trucks that are turned up a bunch. If this is the case, grind or cut about 3/8" off the accessible end of the screw and then turn the idle speed up as needed.

Another tool that works really well for adjusting the idle is a snap on "10 on a stick" socket, expensive but well worth the money for lots of odd jobs. It's a 10mm wobble socket built right onto a 6 inch extension, it's all i've ever used for adjusting idle on these trucks. Here's a link http://buy1.snapon.com/catalog/item....re&dir=catalog

Wanna's 10mm seems like a better idea than the punch and hammer route I been using .

Everyone ought to buy a metric set just for custom cutting and bending it looks like huh? 10mm for the idle, 13mm for the timing...

Idle is now down to an acceptable level.

Took Wannadiesel's advice and bent a 10 mm wrench.

Backed off the idle screw and now I'm not jumping out into the driveway when I place the truck in drive.

I appreciate the advice.

That idle wrench was not an original idea of mine, I saw the one SteamDave made and had to have one of my own.

I was given a set of flex-head metric GearWrenches for Fathers Day... works great for the idle & fuel adjustments! Seemed much simpler than bending cheapy wrenches for every little thing... will let you know how they fair on the top/inboard IP bolt (if it stops raining this week)
